Title: Mea Joins the Let's Draw Class
Post by: mea hamo pena on December 16, 2013, 01:14:22 PM
OK, folks.  I did it.  I started my Let's Draw class.

Here's my landscape.  I must admit -- it was easier than I thought it would be.

I know it's not as good as it could be, so please tell me what I should have done to make it look better.

Not a bad attempt mea. Your reflections (especially the ones on the right) should be the reverse to look more realistic. Imagine folding the piece of paper along the water edge. If the top of the tree is to the right of the base of the tree on the land, then it should be the same in the water. E.g. :
    \
      \ | /
____________
      / | \
    /

I hope that gives you the drift.

I think the Batman's tip is something to concern about, next time you draw reflections.

And ehhhm.... where is your tree of day 0?  ;)

OK, folks.  I made it to day 4 - the ball.

Must admit it came out better than I thought it would.   Followed Nolan step-by-step (rewind after rewind).

I had once tried to do this drawing with no instruction and it came out terrible.

Amazing the difference a good teacher can make.

Day 5 or is it 6? - The Berries

I took this photo after dark, so there is a bit of a glare.

I really learned a lot about the tonal values of the different pencils.  It took a long time, but worth the effort.

Please comment so I'll know what to do better next time.

Fun stuff isn't it Mea?  O0 We talked about consistency with a light source on your palm trees, same thing here.  The light should be hitting all the berries in the same place.  Nice work on the reflected light on the bottom of the berries and good rounding and the leaves look pretty good too.  All in all a good exercise!

Mea, you have launched on the most worthwhile venture! Enjoy. And take advantage of everything that is taught here. I started this class to improve my watercolor, and just fell in love with graphite. Which is so strange, because drawing was the one part of painting that I did not enjoy or feel at all confident in. Now I don't ever paint anymore. Oops!! But I hope you will love it. You are doing well!

It is all about the contrasts Mea. The more a plane is facing the light, the lighter it will be, the more it is facing away, the darker it will be. What has happened here is that you have not quite got the tonal value changes correct as well as their values (darkness / lightness) The biggest ones being the shadows cast by the rocks onto the ones below it.

Take a look at the two large rocks on the right hands side as an example. Add their shadows in on the top planes and you will already see a big difference O0

Thanks, Nolan.  had to read this a couple times before I got what you mean.  In the meantime, I lost the rocks drawing, so might be awhile before I find it to go about correcting it.

Thanks, though.  Now I know what to do the next time.

Up to Day #9 and the cross-hatching!  I tried, but I wasn't very good at it. Curved lines are so much harder to keep parallel than straight lines.

You got the form fine MAL , try varying the line spacing more and not the darkness of the line so much, so the tighter spacing gives the shadow effect and the looser line hatch is lighter or high lights.  Good curved hatching on the handle!

Post by: Val on January 28, 2014, 03:13:04 AM
Steven is right about the line spacing Mea. The closer the line spacing the darker it looks, the farther apart... the  lighter it looks. The other thing is to take your time, there is no behind.... trust me on that one!  :2funny:

Good job.

Thanks for the suggestions.  Hope the teddy bear looks better now. I need more practice, though, with following the carved lines.  I darkened a few places and smoothed out the cross-hatches with a stump.  I hope that is okay to do.  I wanted to try stumping.

I did have a few indentations where I pressed too hard during the tracing.  Will be mindful to not do that in the future.

Oh, can someone recommend a good pencil sharpener.  I have three, but they don't seem to work very well.
Two are hand-held cheapies (General All Art and Staedtler Mars Lumograph) and a battery one (X-acto Model # 16750/16755).

The Xacto has never really worked well.  It cost less than $8.00.  Do I needed a mre expensive one?  The hand-held ones actually work better than the Xacto.

very good Mea, love the textures in this one
Darken the window "inside" on the right hand side, get it as dark as you can. That will enhance the looking in effect O0

Thanks for teaching me so much.

I wish I could, I'm visiting doctors, have had already 1 surgery this year and in March/April 3 more are already planned.
I have splints on my thumbs so it's not so easy to be creative these weeks.  :crazy2:

mwa, just waiting for you girl, so we can do the next lessons together... ;)

Gosh, Germa, you are so resilient.  Nothing will hold you back.

I'm working on the February painting challenge right now in oil, finishing an oil painting for a friend, and each evening I hope to do a Let's Draw lesson.

I'll be caught up soon.

Marie it is the Lets Draw Course.  I think I found it under the watch Paint basket blue button under the pencil icon.  The others will tell you for sure.  I am just over half way and loving it.  I am about to do the horse too.  :)

Marie,

Lisa is correct.  It is a lesson from the Let's Draw course, with Nolan as instructor.  I was fortunate enough to buy it when the Christmas specials were offered.  It has proven to be a great investment.

I am so amazed that my horse came out so well.  I am really learning.  Fifteen months ago, I had ZERO talent in art.

I'm OK, still a bit dizzy from spinal anaesthesia and I have some stitches on a place where you don't want them but that's going to be fine in a couple of weeks.
1 done, 2 to go (in surgery). ;)

Life seems to have gotten in the way of my art, but I did have a chance to do the outdoor scene (Lesson #25?) from the Let's Draw course the other day while Senior Sitting for my friend's mom.  She loves to watch me draw and paint.

This is a scene off her back porch.  I am getting better at drawing ti plants, but the plants in the foreground just do not seem to show up very well.  The stoney-looking things form an old, unusable fish pond.

I think I'll revisit this sometime when I have more experience.  Suggestions appreciated.

there is nothing wrong with the drawing work Mea, what you want to do however is make the things in the background lighter and lower contrast so that the foreground objects stand out O0

Well done Mea!! Keep good faith in you talent! Sometimes i get lost while drawing and the end result, like June 2014 clouds, turn out to be a mess....i realy dont like to struggle with any thing in life, but i am getting better. Drawing teaches me to calm down and accept my booo booos. The best sinario for me is to draw perfect from the start but that has never happend so i just go along an SMILE!!!  Have a great weeken and keep going!!! I do get my strength from all you artist that started about the same time as me!!! Xxxx

It's been about a year and a half since I did the Let's Draw class so I went back tonight and looked at some of my work.

I decided to retry the coffee cup, but did it free hand this time and without the cross-hatching.

Now that I see the scanned version I see that it is not as symmetrical as it could have been.  I have gotten better at making the brim rounder around the sides, rather than coming to a point.

My sense of shading is definitely getting better - I am no longer afraid of the dark.

Also, I finally realized that just the tiniest tweak can really make a difference in the way things look.

What else still needs improvement?

Where did I go wrong?

great job Mea

The cup itself looks great, it is the shadow that need adjusting - the shadow is darker against the object, then shades lighter away from it O0

Fish - The shape is fine as you get all sort of different shaped fish. Just the edges of the fins - using a 2H or H show where the fin ends. If you can't see the end, the lines appear to be separate which in turn makes it look like hair.

You can see this effect nicely by looking at the tow top back fins. They are edged and looks like fins. The rest are not edged and look like hair. Amazing how a small edge can change the appearance so dramatically O0

Thanks, Nolan.

I see what you mean about the shadows.  It did look darker, though, on the original.  Wasn't a good scan.

I see what you mean on the fish fins.  I'll do some fin practice.

Slow, but steady - I'll keep drawing.
