Great job, Brian! I like the way you broke up the line of trees and made some of them go behind the middle mountain. Good shadings.

Whoa Brian. . . .now that is one terrific landscape!! Those mountains and your fisherman doesn't look like a Gecko. . . . I am impressed!! I just looked back at my eraser landscape and almost fell off my chair laughing, but I did progress and I learned so much from Nolan it was quite the experience!
We were all so unhappy when it ended that we begged Nolan to do more. So now we are doing How to Draw Dogs and in January there's going to be his Live Pencil Drawing Classes.
You will do tremendously well in the course, I am sure of it, so carry on and keep posting your lessons!!

Here's my tonal chart.  The middle line doesn't seem to transitions smoothly.  The final line did, though.  Any thoughts on if I should laminate it?  The place I took it to said it would brighten the colors.  I didn't know if that would be a problem.  Should I put it in a page protector sleeve instead?  Nolan, what are your thoughts or suggestions.  Thanks!
Title: Re: Brian's Let's Draw Course
Post by: nolan on December 11, 2013, 12:46:43 PM
To get the transitions, etc right takes practice. Don't be shy to do the tonal chart exercise a few times. It will serve you well for the rest of your drawing life that is how important it is.

Once you are happy. Then go ahead and laminate it. Alternatively you can print out your Pencil Finder and use that tonal chart there  O0

Here's my attempt at the extra assignment with the reflective ball.  Not round, but I didn't catch that until it was too late.  I may try this one again.

Nolan, any tips, advice, constructive criticism on the shaded balls & reflective ball?
Title: Re: Brian's Let's Draw Course
Post by: Steven on December 29, 2013, 08:30:49 PM
You showed improvement with each ball Brian, that's success!  Do you see how much rounder the 3rd ball looks due to the darker shading?  Build those darks for the contrast (it's my new mantra)! ;)

Post by: Val on December 30, 2013, 02:35:00 AM
Doing very well Brian.  O0 Don't worry overmuch about the roundness at this point. That will come with practice. The important part is to get the technique (shadings/values) down. You're definately on track, the more you practice the easier it becomes. I know I repeat this quite regularly, but this is an exercise you can come back to and practice later. Even doing little patches will help improve control.
Sooooo....... practice, practice, practice!  ;D

Hi Brian, I think you are doing a nice job. Your reflecting ball needs to be round. Just watch your shapes. Also on your third attempt shaded balls. Just make sure you have no hard lines.  O0 O0 keep up the good work.

Brian, this is a common complaint which we all know only too well.  Just draw when you can and enjoy it, that's the main thing.

I agree that the roundness of the ball is not that important at this stage. At this point it is all about getting those contrasts right to show the rounding. With each ball your contrasts have been improving nicely, well done

Me, too, Brian.  I have never enjoyed, not even attempted to draw, until I started this course.

I can see now where it has made a difference in my paintings.  I understand the whole shading thing so much better.

I would never have continued with art if I hadn't found Paintbasket.com.  It's like hanging out with my friends, but with the bonus of learning at the same time.

I know it has been more than 5 months since I've posted.  I haven't given up.  I have been dealing with a major issues that has taken its toll on my spare time.  I was able to finally finish this during some down time at professional meetings last week.  I enjoyed this lesson and I am looking forward to the next one.  Hoping it will be less than 5 months, though  ;D

Great job so far Brian.

Look for areas where you can add more darks in shadings or shadows. These will really give it that 3D and have it jumping off the page. Don't be afraid to add darks, you need the darks against lights to give your drawings/paintings depth and dimension.   O0

So I didn't want to go 5 months again working on a project.  So I went 6.  I know, I need to buckle down.  Life has been too busy.  I couldn't get this to scan so I had to take a picture instead.  The mug is done completely freehand which will be obvious.  I'd like to do it again, but I've decided right now to move on to the bear.  I've already started.  Hoping for less than 5 months on the bear  :gl2:

Aloha, Brian!  If your coffee is still good, drop some ice in it- Iced Coffee! :2funny:

Just want to say to work at your own pace; you're your own boss and motivator.  I'm a retiree who doesn't keep track of what day it is, rarely can stick to any schedule; I do what I like and when I feel like it, and can't say I feel bad if everyone is passing me by.  Sometimes I wish I had more get up and go, but I really have too many interests as my excuse.

See 'ya around PB! :)

Here's my scumbling a fish drawing.  This was kind of fun.  It's neat to have different techniques to create texture, etc. but the basics of darks & lights is what makes it as well as the detail work.

the photo came out a bit bright so can't tell if the details are there, but from what I can see you have done a great job Brian :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:

You are right - the more techniques you have, the more fun drawing becomes as you have all these different ways to create texture O0

 well done Brian, for free hand this is awesome. You might want to check some of your vertical lines as they appear to be slightly tilted in places.  :) The shadows showing where the corrugated iron on the roof is old and lifting in places shows great depth.  :)

Post by: BarryC on August 30, 2015, 09:40:11 AM
I agree with Lisa in that this is awesome. I'm trying more and more freehand, and always amazed how much more I use my eraser!

I have loads of these types of barns where I live (one in the next property in fact) and see many of them leaning to one side, so I'm okay with walls not being vertical.

Great job.

I've been in a long dry spell from my pencil drawing, but haven't given up.  Carly, my wife, asked me to paint her some of her favorite birds.  Here is what I came up with last year in December.  My first watercolor painting applying techniques from my pencil drawing course.  I'm hoping to get back to some of the pencil drawing soon.
