Title: Coloured pencil beginnings
Post by: musika on November 20, 2013, 05:38:19 AM
I've just got interested in coloured pencils and have made a start with a few books and videos. Here are some pics of what I have been doing.
Please excuse the camera distortion.

Well done Ray.  Excellent job done here.  What type did you use Derwent?

Sorry, should have said.
The first two are prismacolor, the dog is polychromos.
The dog and mango on Stonehenge in 8x10 frames
The mortar on Derwent watercolour paper in 16x12 frame

Ray,

These are so well done.   The grain in the wood is amazing.  The mango is so lifelike.

Hard to believe it's colored pencil.

Great work.

    O0 O0 O0 O0  Wow, Ray, I have just seen your coloured pencil work which has blown me away.  They are EXCELLENT!!  I quite enjoy coloured pencils although my wrists get sore if I spend too much time on them but I must say that your work is smashing!!!  I use the Prismacolour pencils too although I have just purchased some Derwent too.  Have you had a look at Dupart's work on the forum.  Also excellent. Thank you everybody for the lovely comments.
It is very different from painting as you can't mix your colours beforehand. You really have to look at a reference pic and decide what colours and in what order you are going to lay them down. The reason I got into CP was that you can pick them up and put them down at any time - no waiting for things to dry, no hairdryer, no clean-up.
The slight downside is that it takes far longer to complete a picture.
Anyway, back to the drawing board.  :)
Thanks again.

Really smooth work there Ray.

I've got a big tin of Prismacolors and a few black drawing pads and white ones and "The Ultimate Guide to Colored Pencils" and have yet to crack them out. The time factor is probably the deterrent.

Congratulations on the start for you though.

Thank you Lynn, Batman and Dennis.
You're right Batman, it does take a lot of time to get it right but you can spend a few minutes at a time over several days/weeks. Don't wait until you retire, you'll have even less time then - believe me!

I have never tried colored pencils. I have some though. How did you get started in them?

Excellent, Ray just excellent!  :twothumbs:
I am  truly impressed! I know how difficult it is to get CP's to "behave". You have a magic touch and an awesome eye for the details. Your advice to Batman is spot on. . . do it now, you'll never find the time once you retire. . . . just ask me!!!  :2funny:

Hi Ray, you do such exquisite work with color pencils!      Now I know why you commented on my use of them in my dog drawings!  I am a total novice with them, however!

You are right about the convenience of using color pencils or graphite ones.  My problem is having to stop to sharpen  them or the pencil point breaking on me!

Keep up the great drawings!   O0

I've really enjoyed reading through this thread!  I've been missing so much!!!

:congrats: Ray, your coloured pencil work is fantastic!!!  I especially like the dog on the black paper but they're all done to perfection.

I should read up on how to use them correctly, haven't had time to do that, but I can see by your work that you have the know-how and the results speak for themselves.

Thanks all. I did start on a portrait but got sloppy about covering with a blank sheet. The result was that I dragged a lot of dark hair colour all over the face. I might have had a chance of recovery with my usual paper but I had chosen to try some Pastelmat paper which takes up the pencil much more easily than watercolour or print papers.
Result is  :nono: :pullhair: :surrender:

I shall try again at a later date.
