Title: How well do you see colour
Post by: nolan on September 24, 2013, 02:03:23 PM
HERE  (http://www.xrite.com/custom_page.aspx?pageid=77&lang=en)is a nice test that helps you determine how well you see colour.

If you do this test once a month while constantly working on your colour mixing skills, your score will improve as your eyes become more trained to see smaller differences. Your paintings will also improve as a result  O0

Nolan,

That was a fabulous test.  Thanks for sharing.  I got a 91.

Took me a few seconds to work out a strategy.  I put all the like colors together, then compared each one to the one next to it, then moved it whichever way was needed, or just kept it in the right place.

I bookmarked it to do every few weeks.

I got a 53, some of the tiles were so close it took a couple of attempts before I got them to my satisfaction.

OK, did it again.  This time there were 4 rows.  Did you all have two rows the first time?

Anyway, this time I got a 14, and I'm sure I did it as well as I did it last time.

At least this time I read the scoring info and found out that a lower number is better.

I don't dare try again because there'll probably be 6 rows the next time.

:D    :o :heeha:   My eyes are doing funny things!     :2funny:

I found the more I looked at the colour bar ... the more confused my eyes(?) became. So I would close my eyes for just a few seconds and look quickly, then move the square that hit me first as being the next in line. I repeated this for every square. I did all 4 lines.

My score was an 8! Surprised the living daylights out of me.  :heeha: I think I may have just figured out how to get my blending and shading right......I have to bat my eyes the whole time I'm painting!  :2funny:

Thanks Nolan  :-*

Wow. I'm discovered that I'm not that good with color. I was told by another art teacher that I had a great eye for color, but I didn't score well at all on this test. I'm going to blame the glare on my monitor just so I'll feel better.

I spent a lot of time on this, but only gained 2 points. I wish it would show you where you are wrong. :-\
Title: Re: How well do you see colour
Post by: Germa on October 04, 2013, 10:32:47 AM
hahahahaha, 2 points is almost the best you can get, the best score you can get is 0  :2funny:

They show where you went wrong on the coloured graphic that is shown when you see your score but with a score of 2, that graphic will almost be empty.

Oops, misunderstanding. My score went from 26 to 24. I am doing better but still missing the variations. ;D It would be helpful is the tiles that are wrong would move to the correct position. But I suppose I am hoping for too much ;)

I've done this several times now and the scores do swing wildly at times! The first two times were obviously good days (7 & 8), I have had scores up in the hundreds+ on not so great days. The one consistency in doing these is that the problem areas do remain pretty constant. Just find it interesting.

Hmmm, I scored a 3, which I'm pleased with;  I thought I did a lot worse with colors normally.  Could be the color mixing on the palette is improving my eye.

I think one's monitor has some play in this also

Score 0  :o   Quality of monitors have improved.

I am bran new, not only at Paintbasket but at visual art.  I have been playing all around the site, which I found very easy to navigate (with the exception of the icons associated with names which were not intuitive at all to me).   I was drawn by this analytical test (I love numbers!).   Since this forum link appears to be forgotten... it is safe for me to try my hand at putting a post, before jumping in.   Annie

Hi,
Well, good try for me trying to stay under the radar!  Recently, I have spent a lot of time around the website as a guess.  Many of your postings have lightened my days.  The right combination of being serious about art, and not taking life too seriously.

Maybe I should properly introduce myself in the appropriate Forum... but I am not an artist.  I always enjoyed looking at art, it enriches anyone's life.  Painting is one of the thing I want to learn... one day when I have time.   Well the time as come, and I had immerse myself reading some theory and I am fascinated.   So far, I have figured out which end of the brush I will use to paint   :yippee:   I am off to a good start!

Hi Val,
Regarding the score.  I just approached the test as a series, as in number/mathematical series, it sounded all very logical to me.  I do not think it has any bearing on predicting who can be a good artist or not.  But it was fun to do.  I also suspect that since it was first posted, the quality of computer monitors have improved a lot and that would influence the score.   Also one would like to make sure the screen is on maximum brightness.

I am going to try this again, but this time I will modify the screen to show only a spectrum from white to black... that may be fun to test.
Cheers, Annie

Is it cheating if I use my big magnifier?   :detective:          :2funny:
Title: Re: How well do you see colour
Post by: Annie. on June 15, 2014, 04:26:35 AM
Hi Val,
Why not?   But a magnifier won't change the color, just the size of the blocks you see.  You can also use the zoom function on your computer, easier and more reliable than a hand held magnifier.  As the image is enlarged, you will reach the limit between what the resolution of the image and what your eyes can see (discrimination), and then you will start to loose details instead of seeing more.

Isn't it what painters do when they post a photo of their art on the internet?   By using a poor resolution, the image which still look nice and clear on the monitor, becomes all fuzzy when one tries to enlarged it to see the details.   The brain does not receive enough details from the eyes to 'fill in the gaps' and see a clear picture.   It was the same with the old movies on film, if there were less than 22 (I trust this is correct) frames per second then the eyes could see the discontinuity but if the number of frames where higher the eyes (the brain) would see continuity... yet putting 1000 frames per second (beside being expensive) did not improve anything because the eyes could not see the difference anyway.   Same idea when Nolan asked that we post small resolution image of our Avatars, because they are tiny and our eyes will not gain from a large file with details, yet it slows down computer and takes a lot of space for no benefit.

What this test of colours show is that we improve with  practice!   But also that our nature is to try to beat the system... and that is a lot of fun, gets those brain cells working!   8)

Happy Day!
Annie

Title: Color game
Post by: ArtByG on July 14, 2014, 05:25:15 AM
I wasn't sure where to post this. I remember a while back someone posted a web page where you could go and see how well you see color. I couldn't find that post, but i wanted to let everyone know that I've found an android game that is very similar to that page. It's called Blendoku. The game consists of lining up colors in order. It isn't as easy as it sounds. If you have an android tablet or phone, I highly recommend the game. They may have a version for the Ipad. I'm not sure.

I scored 4;

I think the scoring system took into account my age and gave me
a break.  That worked in my favor, it seems the older one gets the
better chance you have of obtaining a perfect score. !!!!!!

Therefore, I'll have to schedule another try in about 10 years. :2funny:

For once it seem that old age counts  :yippee:

Hi Mary Lynn,
No, I do not thing that you get a 'break' based on age.  You did really good.  O0  The gender/age info is for statistical purpose only.

The score you get is based on accuracy.  Saying this, I do think the people who recently did the test did better... because of improvement in our computer display.

In any case, wasn't that fun to do?

Cheers, Annie

That was fun, I did better than I expected I would being I know my vision is not a sharp as it should be, I need new glasses and it's not going to happen any time soon.  My weak 'detection' range was the blue/greens the rest were spot on.  Happy about that!  Isn't it funny, when mixing greens they tend to be the most difficult for me so the test was true for me.  Thanks for the fun!
