Jenny I hope you can salvage your painting from class!  :gl:

Fun class Dennis!   I can't wait for Val's sea turtle!  :yippee:

I'm not happy with my background-it's so obvious that I painted the left hand side separate from the right.  Ah well-a lesson learned I hope.

Oh Jennylynn, that's too bad. But I have to say, dumping my paint water on my painting might be the best thing to happen to it today. Oof! I need to finish up a few things then will post it anyway. Natalie yours is lovely, as usual. I can see looking at yours that I forgot a few antennae and orange spots. Maybe that will help.

Beautiful job, Natalie.  Your background looks like hills and out of focus bushes.  It's fine.  Terrific, young lady! :flowers:

I could not get my colours right .... the "black" turned out to be blue and I lost my way but nevertheless, here is my paint-a-long.  Patricia

Hope you can salvage your painting Jennylynn.  That is so disappointing.

:thankyou:  Dennis for an interesting and enjoyable lesson.   Patricia

Wow Natalie and Patricia.  These are just beautiful.  So intricate!! Sorry to have missed the last two classes.  I have four distant relatives, two of whom I have not met, coming from Liverpool and am cleaning furiously.  Realize how much I have ignored to paint in my every free second.  Bravo to you two.  That one really looks like it was loads of fun.

:thankyou:  Lynnp for your lovely comments.  Yes, I hear you about house cleaning.  My word, since I have been bitten by the painting bug, everything and I mean everything has taken a back seat.  I didn't ever think I had an addictive personality but boy, this painting business has got me hooked.  Only problem is that I get sooo frustrated when I can't get things right when I paint.  I need a heck of a lot of practice and it all takes time.  Patricia

Please tell me if it would help to rewet the background and lay in more background color. Would it tie things together a little better?
Nice Patricia!!! You did very well.

Natalie, Patricia and Sarah,   :congrats:   very nice butterflies!   :smitten:

Nothing wrong with anyone's background.

Sarah, I wouldn't touch the background.  It's nice and delicate.  Go fiddling and you're apt to mess up when it's beautiful as is.

All are nice and no problem with the blue instead of a deeper black.

I enjoyed the class and being with everyone.

As for house cleaning, what's that???  I'm treating myself to a once in a month cleaning girl.  She whizzes through my house and does twice as much in half the time I can and she's a real sweetie.  Less money to spend on art supplies, but then,  I've got quite a stash to work with by now anyway.  I'm enjoying the freedom to spend more time on doing what I like to do.

Are you kidding me Sarah?  I love yours-all the focus is on the butterflies...where it should be. :smitten:

Patricia your colors are beautiful.

Lynn enjoy meeting your relatives-I don't envy the cleaning part.  ;)

I always knew you were a smart lady Lillian!  :heeha:

Ah Brian.. the only reason you think your butterflies are not so colourful...is because they are too close to your blinding personage!  :heeha: 8)

Excellent Denise.

   Brian and Denise both your paintings are excellent.  I just LOVE the different take on the same painting.  By the way Brian, don't kid yourself,  the birds will just love yours too.  Denise your background is excellent.  Something I struggle with for whatever reason.  Perhaps not wet enough as I get stripes, cauliflowers and blotches of colour.  Anyway, very well done both of you.  Patricia

Brian, I actually think your colors are more cohesive and less opaque. Besides they actually have a background to blend into if a predator comes! :2funny:
Denise!!!!! That bg is to die for!

  Great work everyone, in fact excellent work from one and all!!!

I was there, I watched, I painted and then everything went kerflooie. . . . I'm not used to not being able to turn Dennis on and off. . . .perhaps I should say, stop and start Dennis!
So no matter that he was going slowly, it was way to fast for this rank amateur. . . . Then. . . . .when I was looking at Dennis and not at my table, one small black cat jumped up and walked over my wet paint!!!
That was the end of that. . . .although I was making such a mess of things, she didn't do any real damage! :2funny: :2funny:
I will, however, try again. . . . slowly, very very slowly! So Sarah stop pulling out your poor hair!! :2funny:

Count me in Roxy! For some reason couldn't get anything to print today.  :hammer: Decided to go ahead anyway and draw the flutterbys...not bad. Started to paint background...had to break up a catfight...Laverne and Felix fighting over the christmas/santa bed.  :tickedoff: Got them sorted...background turned into a real mess by the time I got back. Tried sorting it out...not good, but I can work with it. Cats at it again...different feud going on with Oscar and Shirley. While I was gone...Silais, my ever present helpful painting cat, decided a few paw prints would make the painting look more authentic.  Tried fixing those and you guessed it...humongous cauliflowers  :banghead: Managed to rework a couple of those...passable, all is not lost. Unfortunately got kerfuffled about where I was, painted the flutterby all wrong!   :hang: But wait! Major howling.....back to sort it out, but first give Silais a word to mind himself until I get back.  :faint:   My fault I guess, telling him to keep his paws off was not straight forward enough. He had rolled a wet brush onto the side of the painting and....a lovely elongated cauliflower appeared down one side!  :goofy: I think I'm done for today.

Line 'em up Roxy... I'm a comin'  :run:   :drink2drop:

Anyway, the brews are lined up, the chairs are saved and we're just waiting for you and Sarah and anyone else who feels like letting down their hair or whatever, to come & join us. . . . . . .
We will NOT speak of wayward cats. . . . :2funny: :2funny: :2funny:

Oh Roxy-time for you and Val to lock the cats out on D-Day!

Wow, all your butterflies are wonderful, so much detail and lovely vibrant and luminous colours.       :D

I tried to paint along - for the first time -and found it quite difficult. I wasn't sure about the details, I think I missed a reference to look at  ;)
The black went to to dark and the yellow looks a bit muddy. Last but not least I couldn't find a rigger brush in my new studio. Obviously the room is too tidy  :2funny:
I think I will paint the butterflies once more and try to paint the light spots first, as Nolan mentioned during class.
Jennylynn, could you salvage your painting?

And I am looking forward to the next class to try another paint along  ::)

Jennylynn, Roxy and Val, lots of OOPSes, huh.  Val, too many cats in the mix.

Thank you everyone for your nice comments :)
Natalie, I like your background. I saw the light areas as clouds cleverly placed to nicely hilight your middle butterfly!
I do like the way my background turned out but it went downhill from there. I didn't end up with pretty delicate butterflies....(hmmm ... like yours!)  ::) . I give myself the excuse that "at least I kept up with Dennis!!) although he was going slower than usual! :( ;D

Beautiful, Nina! The background detail has definitely added and not detracted from the butterflies because their colors are so intense. Your yellow is quite pleasing in combination with the orange. What colors did you use?

Roxy, there is not a single one that I can really find any technical faults in.  :yippee:

I don't judge a beginner against an accomplished artist. I look at each one's abilities and judge accordingly. I found out years ago that encouragement and to criticise constructively is the best way to get quality fast.

Yep, I'm still in the throes of unpacking, but that does not stop me from giving you all the best that I am able to give. It is just that all the PDFs will have to wait for a while - sorry about that.

I have a problem with wet-on wet technique! When I apply the color to the wetted paper, the pigments are atracted to some area, and it looks like the paper is felted. What I am doing wrong? I am using to much water to wet the paper? Is the way I hold the brush?  ??? :help: I am using Strathmore 300 class, 140lbs, cold press, heavy weight. This is the one available in my area. My paint is Grumbacher - tubes-, and the brush is #10 Royal (I do not have a 12 for the moment). Thanks for any advise, Doina

It is difficult to always explain in writing what should actually be demonstrated live. I see quite a lot are struggling with this very same issue.

I've made a note in my diary to do another live practical demo on how to apply paint dry and wet paper and the techniques that go with it. I will announce the date at a later stage.

Dear NHC50:
I like your butterflies very much particularly the way you texured the
bottom half of the green background.  The difference in tone gave the
painting a sense of depth.  I paint mine last night but, now that I've seen
the effects of your background I'll have another go at  painting it again.
Up to now I have been following along with the replays afraid to
add or take away from the basic lesson.  Thanks for the inspiration.
Great job!
May lynn

Thank you Mary Lynn,
It makes me feel good that I inspire others with my work. I never knew how to paint in watercolors until I came to Paint Basket. I have always used acrylics. Now it is hard for me to go back to them. Sometimes we have to come out of our comfort zone to learn. We just have to remember it is only a piece of paper wth some color on it. So what if you make a mistake, do it again. Remember just have fun.  :1hug:
Thank you Natalie.   ;)

Nina, Jennylynn, Shortstuff, Sarah, Roxy and Pegi all your butterflies are wonderful.

It is so amazing to see all the different interpretations of the subject! Pegi I like your idea of the background. It looks like all the butterflies are there gathered in a small area of gras and plants.  :flowers:

I did mine with the sky as background and to me it looks as if the butterflies were a bit too big.

You've done some wonderful things with your butterfly painting, Martina. The orange bf pops against the purple flower. And I love the yellow work in both the large and small bf. Perfect! The deeper green bg also offsets the darkness of the darks well. Congratulations!

Well, after having some problems  with wet-on-wet, finaly I am ready to post my work. The problem with wet-on-wet technique was three fold:
1 - my inexperience with this technique  ???
2 - the wrong paper - it was to fine. I changed to a corser surface and it worked;  O0
3 - the wrong brush;
After watching Dennis class over and over, and after 3 unsuccesfull backgrounds, here I am. I am so happy that I have found this place! I can watch the tutorials over and over, :knuppel2: until it sinks in this square head!
Well, I am glad that I can learn so much in one class  :yippee: Doina :painting:

Over worked
Over worked
I am so glad to have been able to attempt Butterflies. As many of you know from past comments they are a subject I want to paint more.  Also the ability to take pictures of Butterflies and simplify them into an action packed water color painting is quite a skill by its self, Dennis. I need to focus on allowing myself to see something and simplify it.    Awesome job everyone, I hope I can get to your stature soon!  I have a way to go, but in a year I should be a pretty fair colorist.

Bhavna and Doina, beautiful butterflies

Thebryce, Your butterflies are good    Would have looked very much better if you had kept to the light background. I chose the light background so that the darker coloured butterflies would stand out.

When subjects start to err to the same tonal range they tend to disappear into each other. It is important to take note of this.

Title: Re: LESSON #54 - Painting Butterflies

The entire painting should not be the same tonal value?   Owch! That is  obviously my problem.  I do everything in 1 or 2  total ranges and just use the complementary and/or their grey colors to help things stick out more. I have yet to master the understanding of how to mix paint properly and paint proper tonal ranges.    I see how to do it when I see you do it but I can't figure how to match it when I am on my own trying a day of water color art. In pencil I can see tonal value but watercolor mixing is so different than pressing harder on a pencil or using a darker tonal range in pencil by just reading the lable. Pencil is just black and grey used with the white of the paper, water color, even "no10" versions require mixing anf that is like baking. I do not make cookies very well either.

:thankyou: Martina. I didn't go for the ultra smooth green Dennis did. He said about simulating foliage in the background or something like that. And I just thought that a rougher background for the green made more sense.

I've now updated to the image with the extra shadow on the body of the orange butterfly.

Title: Re: LESSON #54 - Painting Butterflies
Post by: Red1 on March 27, 2013, 08:14:47 AM
Val, love your butterflies.  The colors really pop.  Love your cat also.  Cats are so inquisitive.  Bryce, on the flower, I did not use salt.  I did it in layers.  I laid down a light blue (Cerulean), and while just damp, I dabbed on some ultramarine.  I let it dry a little more, then I dabbed on some darker blue mix and some purple.

Thanks to all for the comments.  I hope to get some more painted before my springbreak ends.

Finally got around to painting the butterflies lesson! They've never been my favorite creature. I had a roommate at college that was so gaga over butterflies. She had them on her clothes, her bedding - even had dead ones in frames that she put on the walls! I got very tired of butterflies that year.  That being said, they are beautiful and I appreciated the lesson...

Thank you Patricia.

I was just looking at all the other butterflies painting from 2013 and 2014... you, Val, and the gang.  All were beautiful, but you have all come such a long way.  This is very encouraging for me.

:thankyou:  Annie, I could not even remember doing that lesson. However, it is so interesting to look back on past lessons and to see the improvement in ones work.

Anyway, I loved your rendition for it is clear and so neatly painted.

Thank you Mea and Val.  I did snoop at yours... way back.

Amazing almost 3 years since last posting.  I suspect many PB members don't post their work.. what a shame!  They don't know what they miss.

Ilinca, well done    Love the butterflies. If you add more contrast to the orange butterfly and the flower you will see a huge difference  O0

Well done, too, Annie

Annie: Your butterflies look great.  Nice colors.  I would have added some highlights on the flower.

Thank you Kathy.  I agree more highlight would make it better.

I looked at the painting it may be difficult to lift.  Planning mistake, I over did the pink and lost the highlights.  Now I will remember, thank you.
