Missed you too, Nina!  You'll enjoy the replay.

It was a good class.  I got cut off on the end for some reason.  I couldn't get back in even through another search engine.  I finally shut down and booted up but by then the class was over.

Dennis painted a very handsome young lad.  I thought Nolan should sit for the 2 hrs and be the model but I guess he preferred to hide behind his camera.   :2funny:

Thanks Dennis for a great class and Nolan for the expert camera work.   :flowers:

Thanks so much Dennis.  I usually lose the signal but had it until the end today :)   I painted an orange background for grins because the shirt was blue.

Natalie--He is really handsome.  I think you did a stunning job.  Love his eyes.  Yes, good thing that the mouth was the same as last week!!!!  I mixed some of my colors in little bowls ahead of time to relax more, but still  :crazy2: .  Of course what I mixed wasn't what he used but worked.

I'm sorry some of you had problems getting on or stay on today.  I usually have problems with buffering, or losing it and having to get back in, but today I had NO PROBLEMS!!  Seems weird!  But, I'm not complaining  ;D   It was a great class, as usual.

I got my Color Buster right after class  Now I just have to print it, laminate it, and figure out how to put it together!

I had buffering problems again.  However, this painting I did yesterday on my own trying to incorporate everything we had learned over the past weeks.  I have finished my paint a long but am having camera problems and will have to wait for my husband to come home so I won't be able to post it until tomorrow but I do have the one I did on my own before our lesson today which I thoroughly enjoyed.  Thank you Dennis.  Here it is:    Patricia

I'm impressed with all the paintalongs and the paint before, Patricia. There are some great likenesses. I started late and i felt I never caught up this time - It's a good idea to have ready mixed paints instead of having to hunt for the paint box!! This is the slightly improved version but this still needs a lot of work.

Thank you Dennis for a wonderful class again. My guy reminds me of Prince William. The color of the background isn't that garish--it's more subdued and goes well with the federal blue sweater. My guy happens to like lipstick also.   I may do another one this week.

Zilpa I am just beginning to adjust how much color I put in while watching Dennis live. I think the camera makes it a little deceiving. He seems to be putting in so much color , but I think it might be more watery wash than I am perceiving. Just watch. Next I'll start going way too light! The elements and overall effect of your portrait are just fine! It looks quite like the guy!
Title: Re: LESSON #52 Portrait - Adult

   Good Zilpa and Bill.

Sarah, I think you are right in what you say about the camera.  Dennis' colours look so much darker than mine when following along and yet his resulting painting is not so.  I think we should just go with our colours appearing to be that much lighter than what is portrayed on the video otherwise we sit with the problem of our paintings being too dark.  Just my thought.  Patricia

Sarah I agree. I am thinking if I could take all the bits I really like about everybody's portrait painting and apply it to a new one, it would be a masterpiece. I think everyone has done a really great job.
I think my main problem is adjusting from letting the watercolour do it's own thing ( like in skies) to controlling it as in portraits.

Zilpa, Bill and Nina really good job.  Pegi--for some reason I can't see yours on the Forum, it just has that little brown square.  That is interesting about the darkness of paint.  I suppose I have always just used the reference pic he gives us.

Great job Jenny       I think if you just soften the transition between the light and dark side of his forehead and neck you'll have it aced. Just looks like his forehead and neck are cut in half. Otherwise...brilliant! Colouring is excellent.  O0

After hanging him in the dinning room for a few days, made one small correction to the shadow on the chin. Had it coming too close to the left side of his mouth ( our right )

Had already redone his Right ear ( our left)  Thought he was going to be a "Vincent  van Gogh" look-a like :P !!

Thought about laying on a very pale orange wash on the light side of his face.... As is seems too light to me.
But I could hear the fiddles tuning up :2funny: and decided to leave it alone..learned a lot including I got a LOT to still learn :smart: No graduation for me...a life long learner

I am soo very glad we are all in this together and a very big  :thankyou: :thankyou: :thankyou: to Dennis & Nolan!!

Nice job Brian.  Another successful portraitist in the bunch. :'(  All I have managed is a mouth of very yellow teeth and one green eye. I guess that could make me a cyclopsist. Dennis, all I could think of when I stood back and looked at it on the wall is the old folk song line about "one eye on the pot and the tuther up the chimley" and the lesson learned is  I need pay more attention to the pencil sketch...make sure I have it right!!!  I was in a hurry and and did not take the time to see if I had followed the templet correctly

Very good for a first attempt at portraits    Many find it a very difficult subject and don't even try to attempt one. Good for you O0

Study the original photograph carefully and compare the chin area again. The left side of the face (chin area) is much too fattened out. See if you can lift out the dark shadows and rework that side. Repost for me to look at it again. :)

I never thought I could paint a portrait.  Thanks Dennis!  I am not that afraid of them anymore.

My printer is still not working so I had to draw the face.  He looks like he has a toothache on the left side...and his cheek is swollen!  The eyes are off.  Wish I saw that in my drawing.    I like the left side of his face, that is something at least for my first ever portrait.  Mouth is funny, too ....well, here it is warts and all....

Thank you Judie and Jani.  I showed this to my friend and if I covered the right hand side with my hand, the portrait came out fairly decent.  I don't know what I did with the right side.  It is really off, the eyes are offset and the mouth is too small I think.......We had a good laugh over it saying the guy had a tooth problem :2funny:

Mary Lou. considering that you did not have the template, you have done a banner job with the portrait.   You have caught the essence of the shading - which was what the lesson was all about. O0
The eyes are very much alive

Post another one when the template is available - looking forward to it.

Mary Lou,

This version of your portrait is vastly improved.  I like the way you have individual strands of his hair showing.  Makes it so lifelike.  Great teeth.  Nice smile.  Glint in the eyes.  So many good features!

You must feel really good about this one!

I know, I rushed, there are  lessons about hair, lips, eyes, teeth, shadows, lights but i must know if I can catch his character.
What do you say? :-\
The next version will be more elaborated.

The first lesson of painting in my life was in July this year and I feel like a chicken in the pile with a grain
Title: Re: LESSON #52 Portrait - Adult
Post by: doina on October 08, 2014, 04:20:44 AM
Hi Ilinca, yes you got his character and expression very well  Now get out of the grain pile and go to basic ;) Do the lessons coming up to the portrait. Why? Your man skin is to pale, the shading under the chin (marul lui Adam) are to strong. The lower face shades are bit to strong compared with the rest. Don't get me wrong, your effort is exceptional! Just take your time and learn each step to do a perfect job. You are very talented.  :gl2:

Post by: Danielle123 on October 08, 2014, 04:22:38 AM
Ilinca,     very nice, yes you will do fine in the next project.  What you have to do is give shadding on the left side of the face (Left side of paper).  The other thing is under the neck the marks ar too prodominent you need to fade it.  Hope this helps.

I can't say it any better than Doina; totally agree with her; do follow the lessons and your portraits will be masterpieces in stead of 'just' getting his character and expression... (that's not just, that's a lot, but after you've done those classes...  :D
can't wait to see your talent developing!)

Doina gave you the best advice. I know it's exciting to jump in and do the entire face right away, but taking the steps to learn how to paint each feature first will make you, and your painting, so much stronger....
Title: Re: LESSON #52 Portrait - Adult
Post by: doina on October 08, 2014, 12:34:54 PM
Hi again, I really like your portrait. I had enough time to study him. I believe that if you do some small adjustments you can have a beautiful more modern interpretation. Take a good look at the picture and then you can see where you can take some of the shades out; like: on the left side he does not have a beard, he is clean shaved that means that the dark color under the ear should be slowly remove with a wet brush. Be careful not to be to rough to damage the paper. wet the ardea and then blot with a paper towel. Same under the neck (marul lui Adam) lighten up slowly. Remove as much as you can from the mustache, and so on.... Please do not start another one in this manner, you will learn a lot from trying to improve this one. If you want me to write you in romanian, please send me an e-mail. Good luck, :gl2: :gl2: Doina

Post by: IlincaotGramesti on October 09, 2014, 08:22:06 AM
Oh, thanks Doina.
Unfortunately can not make corrections, the paper is thin.
I tried to catch first of all features in pencil and then I didn't resisted and i tried to color him on this paper.
But do not worry, I'll practice and the next will be much better (or not?!) ;)

Much esteemed and beloved teacher,

I am very happy and proud to announce that I was accepted to Popular Art School. I opted for the Iconography section lasting two years.

Twice a week for 4-6 hours, along with some colleagues will learn  :painting:  Byzantine icons. For now we are working in egg tempera on wood.

Two months ago I had not even dare to dream of something like this but I met Cosmos flowers, Paintbasket and Dennis Clark.

Dennis, I am deeply grateful that you made me to dare.

I will also go further with watercolor lessons on Paintbasket.

 :thankyou: :flowers:
