Title: Cows Under tree - Trial Run for Painting
Post by: ImBatman on November 17, 2012, 03:37:55 PM
Hi everyone

Since I requested it, I may as well start the ball rolling. Here is a cropped up photo from the 2nd photo tour I took.

Cows Under Tree - possible painting composition
Cows Under Tree - possible painting composition

I think that overall it makes a reasonable composition (from a photograph point of view), but can't work out what to include and what not to as a painting.

I think I probably need to add an extra (higher) mountain leading the eye back into the painting on the right.

The part I am really not sure about it the fence at the front. If I take it out, the eye seems to just race down the series of fence posts that go under and past the tree.

Just wondering if anyone else has any thoughts.

Sorry, was having troubles posting the image, then forgot to add it to the post. Image size was the problem (even though it was < 1024k it didn't seem to like it until I resized the physical image size to 500 x 400mm.) So if you ever have problems posting images, just have a check on the physical (ie printable size) of the image, not just file size on disk.

Right to go now.

O0 I am so glad for this thread.

Suggestion:  Crop the bottom fence/gate/poles and take out the 3 odd poles in the middle.   I like the fence leading ones eye into the painting to focus on the cows then tree then sky then mountain.

Looking forward to seeing this painted.    :painting: :painting:

Thanks for the suggestions Valweb.

If you click the image now, you'll see the front fence and extra posts removed. Dunno why the thumbnail shows up as the old pic...

Any other suggestions / thoughts from anyone?

I'm no expert, so take this suggestion knowing that!!  What about taking out a little bit of the green foreground?  That way the cows and trees would be just a bit closer, and not quite such a large expanse of green in front.  I don't know how that would affect your overall dimensions, though.  :-\

Hi there, you will have to save the updated photo to your gallery and then post it here as we can only see the original photo.

Deleted and re-did the image upload. Nothing else was working Valweb.

 Ah, that explains it then.  ;D

I don't think I'd put another mountain on the right, I like the play of the bright green against the bright blue.
Perhaps a straggling cow or two a bit more in the foreground or by the fence would help stop the rush down the fence line (?) Just a few thoughts.

I would make the mountains in the background shorter to add extra distance then also add some sheep or other animals in the foreground as there is nothing to look at in the foreground. That is why your eye is racing down the fence. Add something in the foreground then the fence can stay because it adds a lot of interest and does lead the eye into the scene
