Title: How to Paint Oil Paintings in Acrylics
Post by: nolan on January 21, 2012, 06:16:17 PM
In this live online art class by Nolan Clark you will learn :

1) What the difference is between oil paints and acrylics and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
2) The basics of using acrylics
3) Learn how to make your own stay-wet palette
4) How you can use the multitude of oil painting lessons available here and paint them in acrylics
5) How you can combine acrylics with oils to complete your paintings faster.
6) and heaps more

During the class we will complete a painting in acrylics so if you have acrylics already, then pack them out and paint along.

To paint along you will need:

16 x 20 inch canvas
Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red, French Ultramarine and White acrylic paints

This is great Nolan, i need to pick up my skills in acrylics once more as it has been many years since i have used this medium,I was given a box of 12 Atelier interactive acrylics late last year and was going to start trying them out after the watercolor course.Plus i am going on a acrylic workshop in Sept to Fiji for 7 days so it would be good if i can use them properly.I will watch for the replay when the time comes.

Oh Nolan I am so excited about this, Acrylics is what I have been using up to now, would love to try oils but I don't want to deal with the smell.  I have been tempted to try them but if you can show me how to use them as oils I will be sooo happy :flowers:

I booked the class!   :yippee:

I have everything I need for the class except I used all my acrylic brushes for the oil painting classes.   :)
To the art store I must  :run:  to get an assortment of brushes for acrylics.

I've done lots of acrylic painting, tole/decorative art but nothing artsie or painterly.

I'm looking forward to the class.

:thankyou:  Nolan.  You are such an inspiration and you keep us  :painting: and learning so much from you.

Maryna,

I have cleaned my brushes well, but I'm afraid there still may be oil in them.  I did a final cleaning with The Masters brush cleaner.  Maybe, maybe, maybe I can use them for acrylics???

Maybe Nolan will give us some advice on this.

I use my brushes for both oils and acrylics - never had a problem. If you have cleaned your brush normally there will be no problem with contamination.

I've registered via "Events" on Facebook re "Free Online Art Class - Acrylics" event posted by Nolan Clark Artist, so I presume I don't have to register here again.
I also posted a question there, ie "What type/size brushes and palette knives do we need, Nolan? Thank you."

Thanks Nolan for another great class.    :thankyou:

I couldn't enter the chat box either.  I did see everyone's comments.

I know it's overloaded and you will solve the problem when you get around to it.  I'll be patient, not a problem as far as I'm concerned, at least for today as I had no questions and nothing to add.

I am wondering though, what am I supposed to enter when the first box comes up with "Guest" in it.  Do I type "Lillian"?  That is what I did.

The sound and TV were loud and clear.   :congrats:

Fantastic class Nolan. I also could not use my chatbox but really enjoyed the show. It might just get me to take out my acrylics with which I had a fight with a few years back. Any plans for a new series of classes on oil painting?

WOW..The quality of the video was awesome , the sound was equally good.! Unfortunately my internet provider seems to be running slow, That coupled with an older computer caused real problems on my studio computer. the picture would freeze for several minutes at a time, then locked up.  The Audio continued , uninterrupted.

On my other computer, it was just the "freeze"..

Is it possible to Easily provide both your current hi res  feed and a lower res feed for those of us with slow connections?   Almost or maybe just like the feed for an android?

As an added incentive..... Ya should a seen the expressions frozen in time on Nolan's face when the video stopped  :2funny: :2funny: :heeha: :heeha: :yippee: :yippee: THEY where priceless O0 O0

Even with the "freeze", I learned a great deal. :thankyou: x 1000!

Regards
Brian

thanks for the feedback guys.  O0

Brian we are currently broadcasting on medium quality which we found most are able to watch, but I will see if we can broadcast a lower quality stream at the same time as well - it all depends on if our upload bandwidth can handle it, etc., will let you know O0

Lillian, yes at this point we have just move the Paint Basket TV portion over to the new server, so you will just type in your username into the chatbox

Lynn, different pigments have different costs, so the series 1 will be the cheaper pigments, series 2 will be more expensive, and so on until series 6. It is important to note that the series has nothing to do with the quality of the paint, only the cost of the pigment

Nolan, don't forget to answer my Q about the texture of the figures, can I layer it, since I don't have that other stuff?  :)

Oh another Q, can I re use my leftovers at a later stage like with watercolours?

I wasn't able to attend the full class.  I kept getting the boot.

Let's say I started a painting in acrylic and wanted to add oils.  I would assume I need the acrylic layer(s) to dry before adding any oil.  For acrylic, is there a typical drying time?  24 hours or a week perhaps to be safe?  Once ready to add oils, do I start with an alkyd and work fatter in following layers?  It would make sense to me if I were to treat the dry acrylic as if it were a layer of gesso.
Title: Re: How to Paint Oil Paintings in Acrylics
Post by: Maryna on January 24, 2012, 07:51:29 PM
Nolan used a hair dryer on his painting.

I have painted in acrylics before (my way) and it dry very very fast. Just don't mix the acrylic with the oil, that is a big mess.  ;)

So disappointed...I was all set up with my tools n paints, and the video kept freezing.  Audio was fine, but couldn't see what, where and how!  So, have bought the replay and will wait patiently til I can "see" what you did. The video came back on just as you finished the lamp and people!!  Thanks for having the class. It "sounds" really cool.
Title: Re: How to Paint Oil Paintings in Acrylics
Post by: nolan on January 25, 2012, 12:53:39 PM
yes you can layer it Maryna O0

Kelley I just use the hairdryer on the acrylics until the gloss has disappeared, then it's dry enough to paint over with the oils

Tousabella, sorry about the freezing. It seems like a few folks were having that problem, I am going to try broadcasting at a slightly lower setting this week to see if helps. The replay is almost uploaded O0

Nolan, Maryna thank you for the tips.  I am actually considering doing the burlap using both acrylic and oil (for highlights).  I still have to get supplies, but I think it's going to work out.  Nolan, thank you for keeping the courses interesting and pertinent!

Question for Nolan about the final Acrylics painting.

With the sun being off in the distance there, doesn't that make the shadows of the people and the lamp wrong?
Title: Re: How to Paint Oil Paintings in Acrylics
Post by: Maryna on January 29, 2012, 04:57:16 AM
That question was asked in class too and Nolan replied that there are allot of factors that can play a role here, the sun, the lamp etc so one can use the shadow in many ways. But lets way for Nolan's reply  :)

the shadow could go one of three directions : towards us (cast by the sun), left (cast by the right hand lamp which is just out of view) or right (cast by the left hand lamp). If the forward shadow makes more sense to you then add yours in that direction. I chose not to so that I didn't have to worry about the shapes of the shadows on the ground  ;)

Thanks for helping me get to the replay Nolan. I enjoyed the session - i had watched part of the original lesson but i had a lot of buffering and a bit of sound screeching so i logged off.
I mostly use acrylics and will until i have used up my old ones. Since i joined Paintbasket I bought some slower drying acrylics. I find that I can mix Atelier and Golden open acrylics and also add my old fast drying Windsor and Newton acrylics and that will extend the drying time of all of them. I don't know what that will do to my paintings in 20 years time but they seem ok now. My paintings are fairly flat though so I will try some impasto type stuff.
Long ago a friend of mine built up and 'modeled' his abstracts with a Polyfilla and untreated sawdust mix then painted over the result with acrylic paint - he got his images very high off the canvas and they didn't fall off - he also added string and other materials at times and the whole lot hung together well.

I have finished my version of acrylic and oil workshop , found the acrylics a little hard to get used to but next time i will use medium in it, figures and lamp were done in oils and i will do around the light  when the paint is dry i did find it a little more difficult to blend in acrylics but that will come with time ( i hope).I used arylamide yellow , perinone orange and crimson in the acrylic painting as they came in a set i bought sometime back and i did not want to buy new paints till i felt i would use them again , the Atelier paint is quite smooth as you mentioned Nolan but unless you also have medium it is harder to blend.

great job Helen

What you would want to do as well is spray the canvas a bit more often so that the acylic paints don't dry on you before you have completed your blending. The nice thing is you can now immediately go and redo your blendings that you are not happy with O0

Nolan:  I couldn't keep up with the acrylic painting, and got 'most' of the sky done. I've had a bad reaction to some of the meds I have to take, and couldn't work on the painting right away. Now....after it's dry, how do I go ahead with finishing the sky and blending my colors? Dampen the canvas first?....Put new paint over the old and blend?...I'm so anxious to finish and see where I'm at. I'm not sure about placing the lamp post and people as I used the whole canvas instead of half.  I'm not doing oils....yet, but can figure that out....I think.
Thanks...any help will be much appreciated.

Hi everyone,

Here's my first paintbasket tv painting. :yippee: It's my third ever completed painting. Let me know what you think.

The little guy in the middle is supposed to look like he is jumping/swinging from his parents hands. That's why he's not connected to the ground.

If you are able to zoom in you can kind of pick up the amount of texture I got on the people and lamp post, but it looks better in person. My camera is a little on the aged side, so pics don't come out so well.

Nolan, by the way, that 's not black from the manufacturer ;D it is hand mixed Matisse Structure paint (roughly 4-2-1 as  per your recommendations.)

looks really great Batman

I especially like the textures in the water and mountains.  O0

The little guy swinging is typical of that age and adds a lovely personal touch to the painting, well done

Thanks everyone,

The mountains were a bit of an accident really. I thought "I've got plenty of the sky colours left and the mountains would be catching those colours, so I just started playing with a bit of each colour.

And as soon as I decided to do it this weekend I knew I wanted the little kid jumping in the air holding his parents hands. Dunno why specifically.

It's just a shame the camera didn't pick the mum's dress up properly. Because of the thick impasto style, the skirt part of the dress folds really catch the light and shifts around as you shift from one side to the other.

Batman, I love your painting!

What a splendid idea to have a happy family in it.  I noticed their shadows there too.   Nice work all around.

I don't think any camera gives a true picture.  Wish I could see it in real life but it's awesome on the post here anyway.

You can certainly be proud of your accomplishment.

Okay I have given it a couple of coats of gloss varnish and it is looking great.

It is painted on the 40 * 50cm single thick canvas. What frame colour would go best? I was thinking either a black or maybe mid-tone brown and wasn't going to bother with a mat.

Just something simple, cause it's only going on my wall and I'm gonna do it myself. That way I can spend the money saved on more canvansses!

I have finished the first painting of the free oilpainting course. :yippee:

I really like it, and it was fun to make two paintings on one canvasboard. I didn't use a big canvasboard, it is only 18 x 24 cm. I never painted mountains before, or cats with shadows , but I think they look nice. I'm happy with my  :painting: So, what do you think?

I love cats too, and own one sweet little black and white cat Yana, who is just 7 years. She almost died last winter, but is doing fine now. I had three cats but two of them are at my daughters house. I thought it would look great these little cats in the sunset.

Rita, you did real nice work on your painting.   :2funny: :2funny: :2funny:  I love cats too!

I am just wondering why you have the shadow off to the right of the two cats.
Title: Re: How to Paint Oil Paintings in Acrylics
Post by: Riya on August 02, 2012, 10:37:02 PM
Hi Lillian  Thank you for your nice comment :flowers:

The shadow to the right of the cats, is from the lamplight  :) It's still a little to dark and it's not quite in line with where the lamp is standing, maybe I'll fix that. The white glow of the lamp is however to light  I have to make that a little stronger. Later on I read in this forum that there supposed to be more lamps, at least on the the right of the cats :-\
So I could have left the shadows to the right out, or painted also a thirt shadow on the left side too, but then you shouldn't see the cats anymore :2funny: I suppose.

Maybe  :smart: Nolan knows how to fix it :coffee: , and how I do paint these shadows the right way  But I like my painting and I really love these vibrant and strong colours. I just love sunsets and made hundreds of photos the last four years.....I   I'll start this weekend with my "snow in the sunset"  :painting: :) :run:

Rita, now I see what  you mean by the shadow created by the lamp light.  I'll be interested to see Nolan's take on that.  Hmmmmm.

Your painting is very well executed.

I'm looking forward to seeing your snow scene  in the sunset.  Happy  :painting:

Lovely work Rita.     Just a bit confused by the dark shadows to the side of the 2 cats. If there are shadows there, would they not be lighter due to the stronger light from the setting sun? Light sources and their variances are a bit of a sticky wicket for me, I'm sure our buddy Nolan will sort it out.   O0

Post by: Riya on August 03, 2012, 12:17:58 PM
:2funny:  I feel the same, Val. I know  :smart: that the shadow is to dark and doesn't have the right angle compare to the lamp.
So I painted over the shadows of the two cats, one from the lamp and made the shadow of the cat on the wall a little lighter, that one was to dark. I like it now :smitten: but I still would like to know how I can paint these shadows so the don't look to odd  :)

Sometimes we just need to leave well enough alone!   :2funny:

I think it's a tendency for many of us to look at the finished product and go ahead with changes we later find are not quite right.

A good lesson learned or reinforced with this one.  Val, right on!  The stronger light creates the shadows!  You go to the top of the class!!!

Well, I'm glad I got up at 5.00 am this morning and plenty of time to catch up.
The subject of painting with acrylics like oils is great and interesting and, I can see people have done some wonderful renditions of this project. I love the variation of each from Maryna's detail figures to Imbatman's family fun day out.   The silhouettes look great and, the cats taking life easy make me laugh  ;D

Lillian, you are right, this was a good lesson learned, ...now I just have to remember it the next time  :painting: :2funny:
I think it will always be difficult to know when to stop, when my painting is finished. But maybe you're right, stop when I think it's oke, upload the painting to one of the topics, look at it a few days or weeks and when I still think something is missing... than I always can make that adjustment.  :smart:  O0

It was very difficult to get the gel at the right place with the paintingknife, because the cats are so small  :tickedoff:
But with two small knifes and a lot of patience it worked. I really like it, I used the heavy gel once before, in a big painting of a Rembrandt Tulip and it looks great. But till now I didn't use it again.

:bigwelcome:  Nice to see you here Peter (?) Felix. If you go to the about me section on the forum you can tell us a bit about what you like to paint and in what medium(s). Open up your gallery and post a few of your paintings. The new members section will explain how.
Have you looked through the free 'How to Create the Perfect Painting' course? You will find a lot answers there. If not, post your questions directly on the forum under the appropriate category and Nolan or Dennis or even one of the other members will help you.
Glad you found us, enjoy.

I agree with Val, go through the free courses here on the site, that will help a lot. Knowing when a painting is complete is a very difficult question to answer because we all like different degrees of detail, so for one a painting will be over worked while for another the same painting will look half complete  :crazy2: ;D

Finally done with Oil in Acrylic, this is for me a completely new way of painting, I tried first time it in the boat in the sunset,
with all that fine blendings.  Nice to learn more wich can get the picture to a new level.
Left side is painted with Winsor & Newton Artisan Watermixable oil colour while the right side is painted with Winsor & Newtons Artist`s Acrylic.
Regards Harald

You've done a great job, Harald. Your paintings look great.

I'm using Cobra watersoluble oils and I'm quite happy with them. I only once tried W&N Artisan watersoluble oils, at a workshop, to little to compare. Do you paint already for a long time with  Artisan? How do they compare to traditional oils and acrylics?

Rita, I think your 3D painting is great! I can see it well on the Cats in your photo. If you were to paint in a Mouse, them cats would be off the canvas and running round the room!  ;D
Well done and, do some more of these 3D effect paintings sometime.

Thank you everyone for encouraging words. This week I feel a litle bit special with all your kind attention, tank you.
Rita I agree with you, this is a fun exercise but very frustrating with all that fine blendings. You`ve got a lot of light into the pictures the colours seems to vibrate and it`s a fun twist with the cats.
I prefer to paint with oil colours but I cannot stand the smell and feel sick after I`v used itt indoors, went over to watermixable oilcolour but if you use just water as medium the paint is butt and uncooperative. If you use an oil medium the smell is bakc and so the sick feeling. I like to paint with it but only in the open air.
I`m in a local painters clubb, we meet twise a week and paint with acrylic, oil is prohibited. My technique has so far consisted of uppload enough colour and see what happens and here is acrylic paint completely fine but if you start with finer bledings and shades it is more difficult. Winsor & Newton Artist`s Acrylic has the advantage that it doese`t darken when it dries and I`v also used Golden Open in the Boat in the Sunset, and that gives you some more time.
I mean I`v benefited greatly from this lesson like the boat in the sunset and look forward to the continuing.
Harald

I tried to apply the lesson and the previous lessons and come up with a new painting.  Unfortunately, all I have to take a photo of it is with my lousy cell phone, but here it is.  I've come to the conclusion the acrylic paints I have are terrible, too.  I'm going to see about getting some better ones before doing the next lesson.

lovely and I can see the techniques being used, well done.
I would add some very low contrast details to the foreground as well O0

:thankyou:   You are all so nice and encouraging!  :thankyou:

There is more detail in the foreground, and the colours are more vibrant overall, but I just couldn't get it to show up very well in the photo.  I've got to see about getting a little camera.  The one I have had a little accident, it jumped out of my pocket while climbing and it was the last I'd seen of it.

I agree with Doina, well done.
The only thing you could change is to darken up the shadow where they touch the feet of the people and fade the shadow out.
Title: Re: How to Paint Oil Paintings in Acrylics
Post by: Val on July 02, 2013, 06:45:24 AM
Agree the shadows do need to be faded out a bit, also take note of how the shadow from the streetlamp lays. Your shadows from the people also need to lay the same direction/angle.
Looking very good so far.  O0

there you go

Now just darken the shadow right up against the figures - shadows always fade out away from the object  O0

I still have a lot of work to do and it is hard to get used to the new medium!

Hints and tips please?

Thank you!

Try to always look for the areas where you can deepen the darks. Keep in mind your light source, and look for those shadow areas. Dark against light will give you dimension in your painting and really make it pop.
The same applies to your drawings. Values and shadings will make or break your art piece.

You've got a great start, looking forward to seeing the end result.  O0

wonderful shadings Rachel

What you can do to get them even smoother is to use a clean dry brush for the final blending, then use a gentle criss crossing motion O0

Your painting looks lovely Rachel. One thing I found when I started with oils after using acrylics is that you need a very light hand on many occasions, especially when blending. Very light, sometimes I drop the brush. Hope that helps.

No wonder I haven't seen you posting in a while.  You were too busy creating this beautiful acrylic sunset.  Love the silhouetted figures!

Not sure if it's the photograph distorting the top of the light pole, but the lamp seems a bit askew.

i have been exsperimenting with developing my own works, yet haven't really felt they were worthy of posting. i changed the silhouette in honour of Bonnie, our beautiful golden retriever.  she  died recently after a sudden   heart attack. She was only seven and she gave us so much unconditional love. She had a beautiful life and never had any health issues and she did not suffer. We miss her so much :( :( :(. It was good therapy painting this. On a happier note i am still very much learning and developing my art. I love it so much.

Tried to do my own thing a bit with this. I did it in oils. I let the sand and sea dry before adding the couple and the edge of the water. I also decided the edge of the sand near the bottom of the painting wasn’t dark enough so added some darker colour and now it looks smudgy and I am not sure about the shadows, I can’t blend them due to the sand being dry so in hindsight…

Not quite sure what to do now. I did really enjoy painting this one and loved it until the very end. Any help or suggestions gladly received  :flowers:

Thank you Lisa, your posting reminded me that I had forgot to do this important lesson.

I learned to appreciate the value of acrylic background, but I still find it much easier to blend oil paint than acrylic paint.

The lady had a bad hairday, she did not expect a proposal!  But what is it with me and drawing hair?  First my poor horse looked like he went through the electric fence, now this.  The more I tried to fix it the worst it got.

This is the oil side:

And this is the acrylic, with lantern, couple, and shadows in oil:
