Title: Lanikai Beach- Popular Beach in Kailua, Hawaii
Post by: liz on September 18, 2017, 11:12:43 AM

The photo is of a very popular beach in Kailua called Lanikai Beach.  At times droves of locals and visitors will use the public access which is located in what used to be an exclusive community.  The residents are not happy about the heavy traffic and invasion of their quiet neighborhood and having to share the beautiful white sand beach with turquoise water with 'intruders'.  Too bad. I plan to do a painting of this beach that my grandchildren love, for a fundraiser in November. ~Liz

Liz,

This will be beautiful when done.

Yes, such a beautiful and popular spot.  Closest I have ever gotten is the park on days when my husband had a booth at the Lanikai Fair.

My canvas is rectangular and the reference photo is squarish so some adjustments were made.  It is a humdinger of a hedge to paint with more value and highlights on leaves; the tree cannot go over as far since the canvas is portrait oriented. On the right side I plan to add a palm tree instead for better balance (artistic license you know) and paint out the other trees.  I hope I won't be making a mistake with the change.  We'll see. The rock wall is taking shape.  Lots to do yet. ~Liz

Coming along quite well, Liz.

I just saw a very professionally done one of the same scene at Ho`omaluhia gallery and yours looks as good as hers!

:thankyou: MAL!  That is great encouragement!  I don't know if mine will look professional, but this public beach access will be recognizable to me as the day I saw it!  You walk along the long sandy path with the tall hedge on one side and rock wall on the other side then see the beautiful ocean, and you soon forget about the folks who live on either side.

Hold your breath Patricia, Val, Linley and Sharon!  Sharon, I have only 3 tubes of blue and Cerulean isn't one of them, so I have to mix my own turquoise.

    Oh! My word Liz, you have done an AWESOME job of the Lanikai Beach. It is excellent, please don't go adding stuff just in case you spoil it, for it is beautiful.

This is so pretty, Liz! Can't wait to see what you're going to add next...I agree with Patricia - it doesn't need much.

:)  I read someplace that a composition has to have balance, meaning it should not be weighted too much on one side.  So I think I will put a palm tree on the right side which will also 'frame' the island.  I should be done in a day or two.  My ukulele group had a performance today at a nursing home and I couldn't concentrate on my painting this afternoon, plus I go to the Y everyday except today (Fri.) and tomorrow it's laundry day.  And I think more about my painting than working on it.  I wonder if anybody else does that, too?  The thinking part. . . I walk by the easel and look at it. . .~Liz

This is looking great, Liz! I love it!
I do the same as you when it comes to thinking about my paintings. I spend more time thinking and worrying than I do actually painting.

We'll see when it dries what final touches are needed.  The tree isn't as  dull as in the photo, but I think I'll add more contrast and highlights. Turquoise water at Lanikai Beach is out of this world if you saw the beach water in person.  Trying to get the right mix is tricky.  Phthalo Green-Ultramarine Blue-Cobalt blue with some white.  Prussian Blue may have worked, but I have it only in oil paint.  I may buy a tube of turquoise if I do another seascape like this one.  ~Liz

I understand what you mean about the turquoise waters Liz, I really must get my photos in some semblance of order. There are so many gorgeous vistas! A couple more days fixing a few systems and I'll be able to tuck in.  :crazy2:

This is coming on beautifully.

Did some glazing for highlights and to add more color saturation.  Wish I could go and have a swim now!
Had to crop out a sliver of the right side to get it straight.  This is acrylic 11x14, for another fundraiser for Emily's high school.

Edited:  In looking at the palm I think it looks awfully scrawny so I will be making it taller and branches fuller.  So it's not done after all!  >:(

Is it better or what?

Super Liz, it makes me want to walk down the sand and feel the water lapping on my toes.

Hi Brian!  I saw a photo of this spot with a guy sitting in his beach chair at high tide and he had his feet in the water.  Shall we find this beach access for you?

:thankyou: EVERYONE!  This forum is very special to me to be able to show my work here.  It is as public a place that I  feel 'safe' to share my art interests since I came aboard PB 5 years ago. It will be exciting to see what happens when my mini paintings are offered as donations in 2 weeks. You will be first to know how they ar

PATRICIA, thanks for your words of wisdom since I am trying to rid myself of bad habits of overworking my paints and/or fixing or adding something when I should put my brush down.  My last thoughts were if I should add a kayak or paddle boarder. But then I decided to show the beach as a secluded secret place the Lanikai people always wanted it to be.  It is an amazing feeling to put oneself into a painting which I always want to do.
EMMALEE, when you're doing a lot of thinking about your painting you're probably doing the same thing, too!  :) Liz
