Title: Liz's New Blog Site
Post by: liz on August 22, 2017, 08:17:50 AM
Just wanted all of you dear friends to know that I thought about an art journal for a long time. I want to share about art and me, how I got started with drawing and painting.  The major part Paint Basket played in my life will be written soon.  I still have to find a top photo and maybe work out a few kinks on  http://artwithaloha.wordpress.com (http://artwithaloha.wordpress.com)
-Liz (pls feel free to comment, OK?!)

The comment section is working.  I still can't get the links to work on this new wordpress format.
I told Pat to start a blog, too, since he has so much to say and a blog is a good place to speak the thoughts in your head about art and the part it plays in your life, your joys and frustrations, etc.  Lots of people like journal type blogs especially which mine will be.  ~Liz

:thankyou: , PATRICIA, I really appreciate that you visited my blog.  I always have enjoyed journal type writing and have a stack of  journals.  When I was teaching, my students thought I had so many stories to share with them.  I love listening to folks relate stories about their lives, like my dad would tell me stories as I was growing up up to when he had Alzheimer's and could still speak.  His long term memory was a lot better than short term and I was amazed with what he could remember.  I hope to tell a lot of stories on my blog!  :) ~Liz

:) Just posted about how Dennis and Nolan are the best art teachers ever and how I learned to draw from Paint Basket by taking Nolan's Dog Drawing Course.  There are drawings of my family's pet dogs and more. See http://artwithaloha.wordpress.com (http://artwithaloha.wordpress.com)
I am expecting more interest in Paint Basket and more visitors here since I also posted on my other blogsite 'God's Enduring Love' at http://heulu.wordpress.com (http://heulu.wordpress.com)

Aloha Everyone,

Posted today 'From Drawing to Painting!'  http://artwithaloha.wordpress.com (http://artwithaloha.wordpress.com)

It's about  how I started to draw with Nolan Clark's Dog Drawing Course which led to painting family pets. Coming up next will be how Paint Basket drawing classes and the Let's Draw course gave me a good foundation of skills and techniques that could be used in painting!

Cheers,
~Liz  :)

Some very famous artists have painted on cardboard. A few hundred years later art conservators curse them because cardboard is not usually acid free and is hard to conserve. Tough! If my art on cardboard is valuable enough to conserve in 200 years, then let the art conservators earn their money. In the meantime, paint on anything that you can apply paint to. Often I suspect that all this bumpf about using acid free materials so that the art work will last a few hundred years is more to benefit the shops that sell art supplies than the artist, or even the art buyer. If someone buys your painting cheaply, the chances are it will be turfed when they change the colour scheme of the room. Haven't you heard... it's a throw-away economy now-a-days? Good on you Liz! AND that other person who gives her senior citizens students cardboard to paint on!

Hi Everyone,
I just posted photos of my Spokane Washington trip.  It didn’t snow while I was there, but we went to Mt. Spokane State Park and threw a few snow balls. You are welcome to use any of the photos.  There’s a couple with a covered bridge.  Except for the evergreens most of the trees have shed their leaves and are spindly looking.

I also wrote a few remarks about the benefits of using one’s own photos to study and learn how to draw and paint (better) trees, shadows, reflections, etc.
       http://artwithaloha.wordpress.com (http://artwithaloha.wordpress.com)

LINLEY, you are right about the permanence of some art materials.  I have paintings still hanging on my walls in oil painting that still look vibrant in their frames.  Maybe they made paints better 50 years ago? They were not even varnished and even the custom frames are fine quality which I could not afford today.  Back then 16x20 frames could be gotten for $35-45 and today cost upwards of $200 from the framing shop.

It’s almost December.  I hope we all can find time for art with the holiday season upon us.
~Liz

Hi VAL,
I liked it for the time we spent there on the mountain.  It was 30 degrees.  I still wonder what seeing a snow fall would be like.  I think I watch too much Hallmark movies!  I imagine that winter with snow must make a nice Christmas.  :) ~Liz

MAL,
I started a couple rough sketches of the covered bridge, one with side view and the other where you can see out the other end and I’m standing in front of it. I want to paint it, but I have to practice drawing it first or I can go to Office Depot and get a copy that will fit my canvas and trace the bugger.  What would you do?  ::) ~Liz

Liz,

How big a canvas are you planning?

I do not work in acrylic so may not be much help.

I'd love to paint one in watercolor, maybe using my crumpled paper technique.

I tend to use one of the copy/trace methods more often now. I still hand draw a few, I suppose it could be related to my vision issues, I just have a tendency to keep drawing bigger and bigger and run out of paper!      :2funny:     So, if I want to get a good result without painting the Sistine Chapel while I'm at it.... I take the easier route!  ;D

Hi MAL, VAL,

I use acrylic only because it dries faster.  It's a toss up now because oil will lend better to blending the colors of the wood planks.  The painting process of my way of painting with toned ground, blocking in and painting in layers is the same for both acrylic and oil. It makes sense to me to use oil for an uncomplicated composition because it won't take too many days of waiting for the paint to dry in between.  Will this bridge painting be as uncomplicated as it looks?

Anyway I plan to do 11x14, my favorite size which I buy by the case.  I think I'll do the sketch of the bridge right on the canvas and draw/paint as I go. 8)  -Liz
(The bridge progress will be a post on my blog later, and posted on PB- when I get going...)

VAL, I was just thinking that we have a PB buddy who wonders when his painting is 'finished' and there's me wondering when to get 'started'!  :2funny:

Just saw photos of my childhood beach.  Totally devoid of sand.  Friends' porches, boardwalks, and landscaping  completely gone.  Septic systems totally exposed.  Hundreds of thousands of $$$ worth of trucked-in sand completely gone.

Luckily, we sold our family home there five years ago.

:( That is very sad what you reported about your childhood beach.  Have you driven by and stopped at some of the North Shore beaches?  Shoreline erosion has gotten very bad out there.  I grew up in Kailua and the beach is unrecognizable to me now.
