Title: Table For One
Post by: Sacgal/Sharon on July 31, 2017, 04:05:49 PM

After finishing the food platter, I needed to paint something simple! And I love the simplicity of this. Any thoughts on edits??

Love the tablecloth.  Really nice looking. Good grain on table and chair.

Hmmm...I like simplicity, too, Sharon, but I feel there's something missing.  Maybe a clue as to why no one is in the chair.

Spilled wine glass???  Crumbled piece of paper?

The cast shadows of the chair, table, and shaded side of the vase suggest the light coming from upper right. But the cast shadow from the vase suggests lower down on the right. Correct me if I'm seeing this wrong.

Here's the ref photo, Val - the shadows cast are as in this. I know, they're a bit different than one would think.

Mea - I think the table is empty waiting for the next person to occupy it. Maybe at a little Italian Bistro! Once the guest arrives I imagine the table will be laden with wine and bread and a big plate of pasta!!

That's a good thought -- Italian Bistro, Sharon.

The light casting the shadows appears to be coming from a window.

Nicely done, Sharon! I especially like the texture of the wood and the wall.

Nicely done Sharon!  You have been doing some beautiful work of late.  My suggestion would be to soften the edges of the shadow of the chair, on the wall.  (There appears to be a second shadow there too)

Thanks Mea, Susan, Jill and Patricia! Here's the final version with the shadows softened and a lighter one added - good call, Jill! Susan - I do love to paint wood grains - it's all about the dry brush strokes. And paper towels are great for creating wall stucco!!

Now I really must try an oil painting class!!

Very interesting composition, Sharon! I have a small suggestion, too. The vase looks slightly tilted to the right. Maybe you intended this. If not, this could be corrected by adjusting the shadow below the horizontal baseline of the vase. Hope I could explain this well.  :smiley6600:

Thanks Gita. Sadly, I saw your post after I took the painting to the framer.  I'll just tell folks that the table is old and uneven and sits on an uneven wood floor - so everything is a bit cockeyed!!

Sharon:  Your table for one is nice.  I like how you softened the shadows.  You also tweeked the background color.

Thanks, Kathy! Framed it looks even better...just need to have a show again so folks can see it in person!
