Title: My Gallery
Post by: Zilpa on July 18, 2017, 04:11:17 AM
Well after all the work of painting walls, bogging holes and all that goes with renovating a 200 year old hall, the time has finally come to open. I am opening on Sunday.

Hi all, I am so Sorry I have not been in touch for so long. Things are going totally mad. This is the best thing I ever did. Here in Langhorne Creek we have one deli, a pub, a post office, 2 churches, a primary school and lots of wineries. We are on the B road in South Australia and I am on the main road so get all the through traffic. Who would have thought that little old me would be driving tourists to the town. People are hearing about my unique pyrowax and are coming to look for themselves. I give the local children one of my A5 sized paintings I do with the iron which had resulted in the school principle coming to see me and I am getting all the classes through for a demonstration in wax painting. I am open Wed - Sun 10.30 am till 3.30pm. My next step is to revamp my webpage and get all my new business cards and fliers done.So you see why I have not spent time here with you. I will post you some pics tonight I have yo go open up now.

:thankyou: Dennis and Mea. Today was another busy day.  It is the cards that is making my money for me at the moment. I had 14 people through today. One was a school teacher of a school in another town. i said that I accept school excursions for a fee and all the kids get a card with a wax painting painted with an iron. Looks like I will have a much larger school coming through. I love encouraging kids to do art. A month ago I was an unknown in this town. Now I have kids running up to me and their parents thanking me. When I walk my dog, people are waving and beeping their horns. This town is full of millionares so it is only a matter of time before my big paintings sell. In the mean time I am living off my cards.

This all sounds brilliant Zilpa!  :yippee:   So exciting and busy for you! It has been and continues to be so inspiring to travel your artistic journey with you. Congratulations on your successes with many more to come. Of that I am certain.  O0     :congrats:

Wishing you all the best in your endeavours.  :1hug:

:thankyou: Val, I honestly believe my success has a huge amount to do with what I have learnt here from Nolan and Dennis, as well as the support from all in the forums. I started off with only a bit of pyrography experience when I signed up for the drawing course and then the painting ones. I still use them as  reference because it does not matter what medium you paint in the  colour theory is the same.

Absolutely couldn't agree more, those Clark boys totally altered my outlook of my visual world! My brain is fused in seeing everything through the colour wheel!  :2funny:   It's all about colour, lovely complimentary colours, shades and highlights.... mist altering aerial perspective....  :D

Now it's just a matter of refining what we have learned and continuing to build upon that solid base.  :painting:

Oh, Zilpa.  This is all so delightful to hear.  That old expression about "paying your dues" will really pay off for you.  You have worked hard and can now reap the rewards.  So happy that you are giving new life to encaustics. I find them totally fascinating.

:thankyou: Val, yes a few more sessions of burning to go. Luckily my cards are going well. People came in the other day asking if I was the lady that paints with an iron. So the word is spreading that I am there and they are starting to come specifically to see me, which is always a good feeling. I have been targetting the bus tour groups. Cold calling letting them know I am there. The owners of the building told me yesterday that they are starting a Saturday market in the adjoining building, sothat will be great.

:thankyou: Val and Dennis. At times it all gets a bit overwhelming, but yes I will push on. I am excitedly waiting for my new business cards expected to arrive  on Wednesday.
I am also in the middle of redoing my website. I find that these days I get up at around 4am. Start off by doing my diashes from the day before then on the pc till around 7 am. Then exercise, shower and breakfast. Back on the pc and phone till 10am. I open at 10.30am till 4pm and while in the gallery, I am either working on my big pieces or creating cards while doing demonstrations for visitors. When I close I walk the dog!have tea and am in bed between 7 and 9pm. Monday and Tuesday i am closed so that is when I go in the workshop and make new frames and also paint the outside edge of my works. All in all I am loving my new life. I never would have thought in my wildest dreams that I would start my career at 60.

Zilpa

So happy that your new career is blossoming.  How exciting - although not too crazy about the "washing the dishes" part!

This is another instance where the our distance apart prevents me from dropping by your gallery to lend a hand once in a while or just chat over a cup of tea.

:thankyou:Mea and Val, I know it sounds hecktic but it will ease off once I have everything in place ( website, email marketing, record keeping) these are things I need to catch up on. I M totally self funded and really lucky to have the hall on a barter system. I don’t know how long it will last I suspect at least 3years, so in the meantime I have to also incorporate lessons and online sales so that I don’t have all my eggs in one basket.

:thankyou: Mea and Val. These are so much fun to do, it does not feel like work at all. I do not do the Christmas ones as a demo because people generally want to buy the ones they see me create and as they are cards to be sent, the nees to be sealed and can take up to two hours to dry.

:thankyou: Val, Patricia and Sharon. There is never a dull moment, each day is different, with new people to talk to. The owner of the builing has a 7 year old daughter, who was asked by her friend if she could come over for a play date so that she can meet the artist. She told her mum she wants to be as good as me. That to me is worth more than any sale.

Yes indeed, that is what it is about. I had never had so much fun as when sitting sketching or splattering paint with the local kids in places we have stopped. I gave away far too many of my good drawing pencils last year, but seeing the joy of what a single pencil and notebook can bring to a child is priceless. Especially when it doesn't involve schoolwork!  :2funny:

Those are the times when life truly is worthwhile.  O0

You all amaze me with your generosity of spirit. Our local art teacher is a peculiar little old man who actively discourages the students from commenting on each other's work. We do, of course, behind his back.  >:D

:thankyou: all, art is about sharing and encouraging. The more you give, the more you receive. The same little girl I mentioned earlier, was sitting painting with a small set of acrylic paints on printing paper, so I went home, got her a palette and some decent paper and a couple of little canvas boards I had laying around. It made her day, and every weekend she visits me in the gallery with a new painting she has done. I think I am marking time, till the parents take the building back for her to show her work in.

What a lovely way to go broke, Val! ;D Maybe you should look for a sponsor to pay for the sketchbooks? would probably be nice for you to be able to keep a pencil or two  for yourself too otherwise we might never see another Val masterpiece!
