Title: Pastel practice pieces
Post by: Abbietaya on July 06, 2017, 10:29:35 AM

My attempt at an American actor, well known for his distinctive voice and performances in horror films. His career spanned other genres, including film noir, drama, mystery, thriller, and comedy.

A young Vincent Price. Nicely done.  (http://www.paintbasket.com/members/Smileys/webby/clap.gif) (http://www.paintbasket.com/members/Smileys/webby/clap.gif) (http://www.paintbasket.com/members/Smileys/webby/clap.gif)

Just be careful of creating a 'halo' around the subject.... especially when it's someone like Vincent!      :2funny:

Nice job on Vincent! I loved him in lots of those horror films!! Is his coat supposed to have lapels? Perhaps you could define those a bit more...

This is lovely.  It makes me smile.

I love doorways.  They have such character.

Nice work on the shutters, too.

Liz,

I like the color.

Not knowing enough about pastels, I may be off base to say it looks a bit "scratchy" (not sure if that's the best way to express myself on this).  Do the petals need more blending?

I hope one of the experienced pastel artists can help you better.

Keep doing what you have been doing, though, you are really making great progress.

There are so many techniques in using pastels. Some artists blend everything smooth, some leave it rough, others will paint a whole picture using nothing but lines. I was quite fascinated by a painting I saw done using only lines which up close looks exactly that, just coloured lines.....but when looked at while stepped back....that's when the magic happens. Everything seems to just fill in and become a solid painting!  :heeha:
I did try a small one using that technique...how did it work?....not quite so good  :envy:        :2funny:

Very nice job on the rose Liz, you are getting the colours in quite nicely. I keep battling with myself....I keep overblending the backgrounds, I can't seem to stop melding them all into one mishmash solid. I think you'll see what I mean when I get my frog finished.
Keep going you're doing great!

Thankyou both,
I tried to add alittle depth to the shaded area , the darker petal appeared to have a lined effect in the shaded area i assumed i it was either caused by the makeup of the petal or perhaps caused by the petal dying. Either way it was the only way i thought i could show it!
I have notuced that if you over blend you can lose good detail even if created by accident. Sometimes, just tapping the pastel into the paper is suffiecent and allows detail to remain. Any advice would be welcomed..
Take care
