Title: Important Announcement
Post by: nolan on June 30, 2017, 06:36:45 PM
Hi Everybody

Today we have an important announcement to make.

After 30 years of teaching and at nearly 84 years of age Dennis has decided it is time to slow down a little and hang up his teaching apron.

Nolan can obviously not create all the tutorials for the site himself, so after a long discussion and some serious thought, we have decided to stop creating new painting / drawing projects for the site altogether.

How will this affect you?

Not much really. The only difference is that there will be no new classes added to the site.

In other words we are not going away and will still be here to guide and support you every day with the existing classes.

So what will Dennis and Nolan be doing from now on?

Dennis will still be chatting and helping away on the site every day. In between that he will keep himself busy painting and writing short stories.

Nolan will also be on the site regularly answering questions and giving feedback. He will then also be doing all the things he doesn't currently have time to do effectively, like improving the features on the site and making your learning experience here even better.

You can look forward to some exciting improvements to the site in the months ahead.

We would like to thank you for your support up to this point and going forward.

We look forward to continuing to support you on your artistic journey.

Regards
Dennis & Nolan

Dear Dennis and Nolan,

Though I am sad that there will not be new classes, I am delighted that you are choosing to enjoy your personal time painting and writing, Dennis. Thank you for the wealth of knowledge you share with us.

Nolan, I have learned so very much from you. I am grateful for each  lesson I have taken with you and Dennis. I will continue to enjoy PB lessons that are available.  I'm glad that Paintbasket and the forum will continue.

Many blessings to you both.  :flowers:

Hi Dennis and Nolan, I must admit when I saw the announcement I was really worried you were disappearing completely. It is great that you will still be around for support. Even though I am full time working again now and never seem to have the energy or time to paint I try to follow as I can. I am hoping I will be back at it if not before then in a couple of years when I really hope I am no longer full time working.

Love to all the Paint Basket family, I do miss you all and think of you often  :smitten:

I just read the message.  I am very happy the site will remain.  I haven't been very active with my painting, but always hopped on to see what was new.  There are years worth of classes for me to get through so I am eternally grateful for that.  When I first became a member I had seen Nolans oil painting class with some purple mountains and a little boat.  That was my first painting and the lesson was so easy to follow that my painting was a success and I was hooked.  I loved the live class back then, I felt like we were all in the same room together.  I have popped on for some of the new live classes and it was great.  I took up painting as a stress reliever, although sometimes painting is stressing lol.  I thought I would love oils but when Dennis started teaching the pastels I was hooked.  Nolan's pencil classes helped me realize the fine details and things have just progressed.  I have done some paintings that I am very proud of.  And I would never have been able to do that without both of you.  Enjoy your well deserved retirement Dennis and God bless both of you

Dear Dennis,
I am happy for you and I wish you many more years of joy and happiness, times to do what you like the most and times to spend with love ones.

Your contribution to teaching art, and your love of art, to all your pupilles around the world will live for a very long time.  You have made the world a better place, one student and one painting at the time.  I cannot imagine a highest compliment to describe your life contribution.

Time to look and enjoy what you have created.  I will continue to do your classes and I will smile knowing you will see them.

Very best wishes  :smitten:  :1hug:

Dearest Dennis and Nolan,

I have sent you a personal note but would like to express on our forum, my deepest gratitude to you both for your contribution to my artistic journey and what a journey it has been.  Words cannot adequately express my appreciation for all the knowledge, guidance and encouragement, I have received from you both. You have changed my life forever.

While I was initially devastated at the news, I realise Dennis, that getting up in age is tough at times and you deserve a well earned rest. However, I was thrilled that the Paint Basket would remain open as there are so many lessons I still want to do and lessons which I would like to repeat.

Wishing you both the very best in the future and may the good Lord bless you both and your families, mightily.

Patricia

WOW - I have to admit, when I saw this posting on my email I started to cry. Dennis - you have been so vital to the development of me as an artist. Knowing that there will be no more watercolor classes from you makes me very sad. Luckily I have a few still to take, so I'll do them slowly and savor your amazing teaching skills. But words will never be able to fully express the difference your teaching has made in my life...and how often I hear your voice in my head when I'm painting. So Mazel Tov on your retirement! And enjoy taking more time for yourself...life is precious and we must take advantage of each and every moment while we can.

Nolan and Dennis both - thank you for creating Paintbasket and for making it so accessible to all of us. I am relieved it will continue to be in existence and that your advice, and those of everyone else on the form, will be just a few key strokes away. And as soon as my schedule permits, I'm happy to know there are so many oil and acrylic classes just waiting for me to take!

Thank you everyone for your understanding. We highly appreciate it. We will still be in the background and emerging every so often. I still scan the Forum every day ;)

Unfortunately there comes a time in one's life when certain serious decisions have to be made - and this was one of them. Art has been part of my life for over 73 years and has been my lifestyle for over 30 years. I have not held back any of my secrets and techniques in all my teaching videos. I have found great satisfaction passing on my knowledge to help others also become fantastic artists. I did not bury my talents which the Lord kindly gave me. Hopefully one day I will hear the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant!"

The other part of my life, which unfortunately has taken a backseat for too many years, is writing. Hopefully I will be able to start delving into it very soon. For example, I started to write a non-fiction book "Your Hidden Power - how to make your subconscious mind work for you" just on 10 years ago. Our emigration to NZ put it in the cupboard for a long while. It is more than 3/4 finished and all going well will be published sometime this year. A tremendous amount of research was and is involved.

While in NZ I have managed to publish a book and  a few short stories on Kindle. These short stories of the adventure of Andy Stewart are based on actual incidents in my life. There are many more in the pipeline. You may see what I have done so far here: Dennis Books  (https://www.amazon.com/Dennis-Clark/e/B014M8XCFK/ref=ntt_dp_epwbk_0)
If you do buy any I would appreciate an honest unbiased review on Amazon.

Once again, thank you for your confidence in Nolan and myself. We both have left a large legacy for you all to enjoy.

Nolan and Dennis,

Frankly, I wondered how you both kept up with with the pace you had set in introducing new lessons. So happy to hear that the pressure will be off now.

You both have created such a wonderful environment here for us to learn and grow as artists.

Thank you for all that you have done for me personally to gain confidence in myself as an artist.

Best wishes for success and enjoyment with your writing, Dennis.  I have read some of your work and like your style.

Enjoy! Thank you so much for everything.

Aloha

Nolan n especially Dennis, you truly are a beautiful humble human being and too bad I am in Canada because I would love to shake your hand!  even though I am fairly new to paint basket I must say you have changed my life. The quality of drawing I have achieved in a very short time is truly amazing.  The people that know me can't believe I learned such quality skills on the internet .I find if I am having trouble I always refer back to the videos and my mistake is corrected. I am glad you will still be around and glad for your change in direction and you deciding to fill your passion of writing.   :)

I am new here and just learning.  While live classes sound very intriguing, you have put together a wealth of information and so many classes that I am looking forward to taking.  Thank you Dennis and Nolan for putting together this wonderful site for learning and encouragement with a family feel.   :thankyou:

Dennis, I wish you the best of luck with pursuing your writing.  It sounds like you have a true passion for it.  I am glad you will still be around here too.

I have been part of the Paint Basket family for so many years.
When I got word about the changes I was totally overcome with emotion and deeply sadden.

My initial thought was oh no, I have failed Dennis. I really just wanted to 'make' it and let him see me succeed.

I am however so far behind in the classes. I know I still have time to better myself.

I want to thank Nolan and Dennis for all the years of dedication. If it weren't for that Cosmos class I just happen to stumble upon I would have never experience the joy of creating art. Dennis thanks to you pen lessons I was able to also do a few commissions and get paid for it.

Thank you Nolan for bringing Paint Basket and all those hours to us. There are no words to say how greatful I am.

All the blessings and loads of success to Nolan and Dennis.

Not one of the Paint Basket members have ever failed me, except only one type: Those who have stopped even before they have started. Those who really fail are the ones who tell themselves, "I can't", before they have even tried. Art is also not for everyone. Some try, but feel that they would rather go in another direction - that's OK.

Nolan and I have seen absolute beginners go from struggle after struggle, persevering until the light starts shining through the darkness. Success comes only after a time of struggle - but then each step up the ladder has a struggle of it's own.

My problem is that most artists cannot perceive just how far they have progressed in the quality of their work.
They praise others, but pull themselves down. All I can say is that we are proud of all the members. Struggle is part of the game. You may not believe this, but I also still struggle in many aspects. Why? Because there is not one on earth who can truly say that they have reached the top rung - there is still too much to learn - art is always evolving.

How many artists can say that they can paint like the Old Masters? Unfortunately, over the many decades, Rebels in the art world have systematically, on purpose, broken down the values and quality.

Keep up the good work - keep climbing the ladder of success.
Love you all lots :flowers:

I have thought long and hard about what to say to you.  However, words cannot express how I feel about the effect that the two of you have had on my life.

It has been such a privilege to learn from you.  I like, so many others, didn't think I had an artistic bone in my body.  You proved me wrong.  Thank you for your wonderful lessons and for sharing your knowledge with me.  I appreciate the time, patience, guidance and encouragement you gave me along the way.

My art has given me so much joy, as it does, to those who have my work hanging on their walls.  You have touched more people than you know.

Enjoy your retirement Dennis and  Nolan whatever your plans are for the future, I wish you the very best too!

Dennis, I wish you a happy retirement and Nolan I am very happy that you are keeping the website going and although we will have no new tutorials I still haven't explored all of the classes online so I have a lot to look forward to.

Dennis and Nolan, what a legacy you are leaving for us and all future PBers! Although there will be no new classes, there is so much we can learn from for a lifetime. You are both such a blessing.

Dennis, I cannot thank you enough. I am so blessed to have found PB and was thrilled to get "hooked" after my very first wc lesson of "Cosmos". I had a dream a couple years ago that you gave me a package filled with blank note-cards. I was to use them for painting and giving them away -- I was so filled with gratitude. Guess it's time I start painting on note-cards  ::) ...

I look forward to reading your almost finished new book and happy to know you both will still be active on the forum. God bless you, Dennis and Nolan.

I think you tried retiring before Dennis, so I hope it sticks this time and you enjoy all those things you miss most, you certainly deserve it. What you put together at Paint Basket has touched and changed so many lives for the better that it will never be forgottn by any of those whose lives you touched.

Nolan, you taught me "how to fish" so to speak, so now I have something I never had before and will now always have.  I am grateful for your gift of teaching -  with each lesson I felt I was propelled to a higher level. Only rare and talented teachers can both inspire and pass knowledge on like that. Thank you for that and I'm so greatful for finding paint basket.

God bless you both in your new endeavors.

Happy retirement Dennis, glad to know you are about to continue with your writing. I thank you for the 4 or so years I spend with you as a teacher while you and Anna lived in Auckland. I certainly learnt an incredible amount of painting techniques, do and don's and how to do things with oils, which I now apply to my paintings with confidence. Nolan, thank you so much for introducing me to the art of graphite drawing. Your classes were so informational and helped me not to be afraid to pick up those pencils and draw.

And thank you both for offering a wonderful site where I could meet artists from all over the world who were starting out like I was. The support I received was amazing.

Happy retirement Dennis, The lessons learnt from both you and Nolan have been and always will be invaluable to me and many more new artists. Paint Basket has taught me how to think and see as an artist, not forgetting the practical skills. My success as an artist is due to all I have learnt from the both of you, and I will be forever grateful to you both. So a huge thank you and I wishyou all the happiness in your new adventures. : :thankyou: :thankyou: :thankyou:

Dennis, there are not enough words to describe  the gratitude I feel toward both you and Nolan.. you opened a world for me that i did not know how to enter. AND it was NOT just the painting / art... you also shared with us a world view / value system ......an attitude toward life  that has enriched me greatly.  AND the "Family" you created via the forum.. ten thousand thank yous would not be enough

Wow. boy am I late in responding to this thread! I am speechless ! No not really. Lol Dennis I hope you have a loooooong and fruitful  retirement . And to you Mr.Nolan. I don't  have words in me to express the gratitude  I feel  for what you did for me. And you know what it is! If it wasn't for you and my PB family my portraits eyes would probably be crosseyed! And I'd have on my landscapes the mountains going over the sun! Oh yes I would! And Ive sketched that stupid spoon ten times now trying to get my shading right and haven't  given up! Cause you taught me not to! I had no confidence in my work at all when I came to these virtual doors. And you and the rest of the family at PB gave me a big present of confidence . That is why You just can't  shut these doors. I might have to share my present with a newcomer one of these days! I only wish the best for both of you always. You both started something soooo good and such a wonderful and safe place to grow as an artist.  Thank you from my heart. Oh and my arm wants to thank you too! :2funny:
