Title: Painting and travelling
Post by: scouserl41 on June 23, 2017, 08:46:22 AM
We're staying with some friends in Gergal Spain near Granada. As a thank you I spent this afternoon painting the view from my friend Ken's favorite spot in their back yard so when they are back in England they can look up and be reminded of this beautiful place.

What a great gift! Is there anyway to lighten up some of the mountains in the background? They're all the same tone and the ones in the back should be lighter. Love the composition!!

Thanks Sharon and all,
The painting is 500 miles away now! I also enhanced the photo I took before I posted it so the colors aren't really true.
Ken loved it because I innocently asked him where his favorite spot in the house was and then painted it from there.
I always want to give people something for letting us stay with them,  they flat refuse money but a piece of art work just for them seems acceptable.

I agree about giving are in lieu of a payment - art lasts forever and represents amazing times. A few bucks is gone in a flash! Again, such a wonderful gift!!

Having been busy travelling and not painting we stopped for 5 days in Switzerland to let me catch up.
The farm house belongs to a friend of Barbara from college days, they now live in France in a little village called Lissac in the Dordogne Area. The house dates to at least 1626 and they are deep into it's restauration.
The river scene is ina little Spanish town called Potes in the north of Spain where we stopped after arriving by ferry. It's in a pretty area "Pecos De Europa" which is a national park.
Still a lot of catching up to do though!

I'm learning so much about watercolors! My choice has been oils but there's no room in this tiny Rv for them. I bought a cheap WC set at Micheals, 50% off with a coupon!. I carry a WC pad, 2 shot glasses for water, a little pouch with 6 brushes, and a roll of masking tape in a small backpack. In a separate bag I have a selection of graphite and colored pencils and a sketch pad (almost full).
I always have my Fuji camera with me and 2 sets of batteries. I average about 120 pictures a day when we are being "touristy".
The farm house painting will get mailed to Bev as a thank you for having us.
Hopefully her grandson Elion (10) will catch the art bug as we sat and sketched together for a couple of hours.

I had to dash out and paint this this morning while Barbara was doing laundry !!
We're on the Mosel River in Germany and there are castles all along the river. This one just happened to be next to the campground we stopped at.
Colors are a little on the weak side and enhancing the photo didn't do much to add to the painting but I enjoyed it!

I should love to see that some day.

Lovely Brian, I am a bit of a nut when it comes to old buildings and a special love for the castles of old. Very nice work on the caravans and the castles peeking out above the trees.

I am truly enjoying my travels with you... best to keep that between us then, eh?  ;)

You are most welcome to ride along Val!
By the way if you get stuck for internet and the monthly challenge again I'd be glad to help. As long as I have an internet connection that is!

Thanks so much Brian. I had thought to try using my poor old not so smart phone.... but can't see the screen to see what it's doing! Wonder if they'll ever figure out one in braille?(http://d326oobcc22bax.cloudfront.net/content/50125/1507044.GIF)        (http://d326oobcc22bax.cloudfront.net/content/125927/1512040.gif)

... while she was doing the laundry.  Did I get this right?   So next week, you will be doing the laundry and she will be sightseeing, correct?  :1hug:

Ah!  La Moselle...  :cloud9:  Which castle is in your painting?

Sorry, I was dreaming... nice paintings

Sorry Anne, we've been struggling with internet connections.
The castle is https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bischofstein_Castle_(Germany)

No problem. I thought you were struggling with the laundry machine  :2funny:

Thanks for the link.  I have seen many of those castles, also along La Loire, in the 70's, but not the Bischofstein.  I just read its story, very interesting.  The prisonners should had a nice view from those donjon towers, if they could reach the tinny windows.  On the othe hand it must have been damp and cold most of the year.

The campground in Boningen near Interlaken Switzerland.
I completely failed to get any depth into this sketch! The houses in the background where across a river up the side of the mountain. Still, got to try it!

Brian,

Your travel sketches are so enjoyable to look at.  They are not meant to be perfect; they are just quick memory keepers!

Looks like you will have lots of stories to tell when you return.

Have fun and safe travels.

Picked up my watercolors again this week, we've been too busy with running from Hurricane Irma and catching up on maintenance before now. We stumbled onto a beautiful Corps of Engineers park here in Foscue Alabama.
This is our view from the patio area outside our RV.
Life can be tough sometimes....

:heeha: Gorgeous Brian, both the view and your painting!      I'm almost ready to start venturing out in the dinghy to find some new vistas for my pastels. Should be interesting.... taking my w/c and a small pastel kit as well. No idea how this is going to work out but should prove interesting to say the least!  ::)   Just have to sort out some colours to finish off the kit.

It's going to take me some time to work up to your level of painting, but you give me something to strive for. Keep them coming!  :yippee:

Thanks Val!
I'm particularly proud of the trees in that one.
Mine have been green blobs, not very convincing trees, so I spent a couple of hours walking around the campground, looking at trees and taking pictures of them. When I sat down to paint I made my mind up that I was going to really concentrate on the trees.
They probably took me the longest, but I told myself when to stop so I didn't overpaint them.
I don't think the reflections are quite right, maybe that's what I need to work on next.

A lady at the Art League in Florida showed me her Dad's drawings, he was a professional illustrator.
She told me that when she told him she wanted to be an artist too, he told her about the tourist in New York who asked a local how to get to Carnegie Hall.
"Practice, Practice, Practice" said the man.

So go get the dinghy!

Oh, beautiful, Brian.  Controlled looseness! (Hope that was not an oxymoron).

Thanks MEA,
Controlled looseness, I like it!
I often wish I could paint in a very loose style, but my old drafting training holds me back.
Now that I'm feeling more relaxed working in watercolors and building layers of colors I think I gave have loosened up a bit. Sitting in the sunshine in such a pretty location doesn't hurt either!
