Title: Cupcake and Twinkee
Post by: Sacgal/Sharon on June 10, 2017, 10:21:41 AM

I've been asked to donate a couple of paintings for a fundraiser for a group that supports Asian women and children that are victims of domestic abuse. They can't be priced at more than $200 each. Found the ref photos on Pixabay - they're approx 4x6. Any thing I should do to improve them? Good thing I'm not a sweet eater - I'd be heading over to the grocery store right now to pig out on pastries!

Definitely good enough to eat. Well done, Sharon!

Sharon - They look so real.

I am assuming that there is no background although the camera seems to have given it some muted pinky-bluish tones.

Even though I hate painting backgrounds, I would add a muted one  - maybe a yellow wash to the cupcakes painting and maybe a blue to the twinkie one.

But that's just me talking.  They are great as is.

Thanks Mea and Susan! And the background is just the off white from the paper. Since they're such small paintings I worry a colored background would overwhelm. Let me ponder that idea!

Here they are framed. Any other thoughts on painting the background based on seeing them framed? Backgrounds are often times scary to add!!

Hi Sharon,
I presume that these two paintings are also for your caterer friend.   Personally, for that purpose, I would not alter the background. But that is just my opinion.
They look scrumptious!!  Well done.

:thankyou: Cathy and Val! And no color in the background will be the final choice!

And Cathy - this is for a nonprofit art show coming up. Doubt the caterer would ever serve twinkees at one of her fancy dinner parties - although it might be a fun addition!!

:thankyou: Mea, Patricia, Kathy, Cathy, Linley, Terri and Mary Lou! And Linley, my husband has been complaining about the paintings - I've hung them in the kitchen for now and he says they're making him crave pastries!!

:2funny: Sharon. I find the paintings so realistic and I think so too, that a background is not necessary.
Good luck for fund raising.

Thanks Dennis and Teresa! These go on sale at the nonprofit art show on July 12. I'm doing a 50-50 split on any of my art that sells. Dropped off 22 paintings (many older ones) before I left!

I hope so! This will be my third year doing this show - I've donated $1600 to them over the past 2 years, so it would be nice to do be able to contribute another tidy sum to them this year!

Here's what a hoho looks like, Val! I used to eat the chocolate off the ends first, than around the middle. Next I'd carefully roll out the hoho and would lick off the frosting before eating the cake - I was so methodical even then! I'm sure others had their special way of eating these and ding dongs, too!

Thanks Lisa and Liz! I'm so glad I lost all interest in eating sweets several years ago - otherwise I'd be a chunky monkey after painting my food pictures - I'd want to go out and eat the real ones, too!

And these delicious paintings have sold! The husband wanted to surprise his wife with these for her birthday - they go great in their newly renovated retro kitchen. Good news - she loves her gift!!

Sharon:  I think these paintings are great as is.  I really like painting small.  After seeing your small paintings I decided to try them.  I am used to 1/4 or half sheet paintings.  You inspired me.

 :thankyou: Win, Kathy and Annie!

And Kathy - small paintings are SO popular with my collectors. And they’re faster to paint, too! I especially enjoy painting smaller when I’m in Puerto Vallarta - easier to pack! I love that you’re experimenting with this size and I love what you’ve been creating!!

Annie - you’re right - if I was eating more sweets there would be little time left to paint!

Thanks Louisa! I got the frames at Aaron Bros on sale - what made them pop is I had my framer create the double mats. Made a HUGE difference!
