Title: Youtube live class with Dennis, starting Mar 29, 2017 - Still life
Post by: Annie. on March 31, 2017, 04:50:15 AM
I watched the class along but was not registered for the chat.  It appears to me that this is an advanced class, am I correct?

I also learn the theory by watching and listening.  But I don't want to try advanced classes before I have mastered the basic and intermediate level.  Jumping ahead of myself may discourage me.

Still I hope you will post your paintings as you progress.  There were quite a nice group yesterday.

Hi Annie, as long as you were not on full screen mode the chat box should have been on the right hand side of your screen. No special registration is needed.

I try to watch everything I can, whether it is beginner to advanced. I always learn something. I may not always give it a go, but I still feel it is worth watching. Most everything Dennis shows has been covered in one of PB's previous lessons, and often a few extra 'treats' are thrown in.

Just keep building your skills by following the lessons, you'll be painting along in good measure. Have fun and enjoy the process, no punch clocks or time restraints here. Enjoy and learn at your own pace.

Annie,

When I clicked on to Dennis's live class yesterday, I did not have CHAT either.  Then I realized I was using a different browser than the one I usually use and was not logged in on YouTube.  Once I logged in, the CHAT came on.

Hope that helps.

Yes, I think you have to be logged in to YouTube in order to participate in the chat.

Annie, Dennis makes his methods and procedure so clear that you ought to be able to give it a go. Even if you aren't completely satisfied, you'll learn things in the process. I have found, and not just in painting, that if I set my aim a bit further than I'm comfortable with, I often surprise myself.

I'm sorry I'll have to miss the next live class. I'll have house guests staying with me.

Thank you all.  Actually I could see the chart box, but my comment did not get posted.  Since I did not see them, and nobody said hi to me 😢 ,  I assumed you did not see them either.  I would assume one needs to login an account with Youtube.  I will check into that.

Fully agree Sue, but most of us learn to walk and then to run.

Val, no problem with progressing at my own rate.  I won't run out of classes anytime soon.  Enough until I am about 120, and by then our master-teachers will have posted more.

Good advice to just listen and soak in the theory... but then follow the lessons in order for the practice (and more theory).  I will do just that.  Otherwise I will soon be scatered all over the place and get desorganized.   :thankyou:

Hi, Annie.  I've just joined Paint Basket after struggling along on my own for sometime. The teaching quality on this site is so good I would be happy to tackle anything they demonstrate, although I like to watch the video and then re-watch it and paint pausing the screen after re-listening to each instruction  I did paint along with Dennis in this lesson, but made several errors before the class began by not downloading the template (I drew it), and anticipating that Dennis would be using masking fluid. I put in the masking fluid before the class started in case I couldn't keep up. But Dennis used tape as a mask instead. So now I have a painting blistered with masking fluid which I'll have to rub off before the next lesson, or it will stick to the paper if I leave it for too long. I thought of trying to finish the painting by myself and then do another one following Dennis's instructions so he could have the gratification of seeing what a difference his teaching makes. If time permits... I'm also working on Nolan's pop art class, and a couple of independent water colours, plus I have a visitor every second week who interrupts my painting progress...

Hi Linley from Transmania,
Happy you found tPB.  I remember that I accidently stumpled on PB while searching some parallel information.  Lucky accident!

I fully agree with you the instructions on PB are the very best.  Well explained, logic, easy to follow, etc.  I you follow claases you will see they build on each other and the progress is fast and smooth.  I started from scratch (i.e. never had any art training) with only 2 or so hours a week for art, I managed to do some rather satisfying work.   I enjoy every minute of it, and the more advanced artists and the prifessional ones are most supportive and generous in helping the beginner.

Like you I appreciate the 24h access, stop, rewind, etc.

Please post your work, we will love to see it.  I will go check your galery now and see if you posted art yet.

 :welcome:  Linley !

Hi Annie... My profile has me down as a pencil artist, which isn't quite true, although I am trying to improve my drawing skills by copying anything that takes my fancy... I actually like painting in both watercolour and acrylic and sometimes using both in the same painting. I would put up more of my experiments, but the gallery keeps on saying it can't find the pictures I've tried to upload. I think it might be a fault with One Drive (Windows 10) rather than PB. But I'll get them there one day.

No, the pencil does not make you a pencil artist... it confuses everyone at the beginning.  It is simply an image that reflects the number of posting you wrote on the forum.  At 50 postings, you will see an additional icon showing up, and so on and so on.

I am not sure what you mean by 'gallery cannot find your image'.  You have posted successfully before and there are no limit in number of images, only the size of the image you download.

I see 10 images in your gallery.  Window 10 is compatible, nothing to do with that.

The only way to be on time for a live lesson is to look at the clock on the site... to many different time zones and DST for some and not others!  The clock is a cutdown with days, hours, and minutes to the start of the next class.

Annie... How odd you can see 10 images.  I can only see 4. I've reported it to the moderator, which with hindsight was probably the wrong place to ask, but hopefully they will pass the query on to the correct person.

Sorry Annie... but which site is the clock on?   I can't see one on the video itself..... or am I just blind? After I sent you the 'time for Pt2 question' I realized that we are probably on opposite sides of the International Date line, so I can see your point about needing to look at the clock.

Go to your profile, under media. There are 10 entries, 2 drawing, 2 painting, 5 photo references, and 1 blocked to me.

I think the moderator is when you have objection to someone post, descrimination, issues, etc.

The clock is included in the email you received from Dennis.

Hope this helps.

Hi Linley,  The clock is actually a count down timer in the email. It doesn't matter where you are in the world the countdown time to the start of the lesson is the same. Just add however many hours/minutes it shows to your own time and you won't miss a beat.  O0

Hi Annie.... I understand now why I could only see 4 posts.  I was only looking at my paintings Gallery and not including photo refs.  I haven't been able to download to download any more photo refs either.  I get the same message: Can't find file.  I'm sure it's One Drive. I'm having all sorts of trouble with it. I have thousands of pictures saved over about 15 years, some mine, some saved from elsewhere.  Every now and then One drive has a hissy fit and loses a whole file of a thousand or so pictures.  It usually turns up again a few weeks later in the strangest place... and sometimes in the right place.  I'm also having trouble saving my photos .  I have a phone, a tablet, and an old laptop and getting them to agree on which files are available is a bit of a nightmare.  We have a new optic fibre network connection system here in Tasmania, and contrary to all the political promises it is slower than the old wire connections. I suspect One Drive is tripping over itself trying to coordinate all my changes on the slow system. However I'll read the tech forum down below and see if I can pick up any hints from there.  then Ill email Microsoft and have a general whinge. Regarding Dennis's initial email... I deleted it after the first session thinking I wouldn't need it any more. As I have 3 machines with my emails on each there is a chance I can find it somewhere  in one of the trash baskets as, although they sync the email addresses (with variable success), they don't sync deletions, so I might be able to track it down in one trash basket or the other! . Thanks a million for all your advice and help. And thankyou Val too.

Linley,
The PB members can help you navigate thru much of any issues, but when we reach a wall... like it appears now,  it is time to send a PM to Nolan.
It is wise to keep a copy (CD, hard disc, or memory stick) of anything you leave on he Cloud).

Don't give up when you get this all clear you will find it is a breeze to navigate PB.  And your pervecerance will be work a pound of gold.

Annie.... I may have solved the problem.... or one of them anyway... I think my keyboard sensitivity on the notebook was too high so I was inadvertently moving files to new locations by brushing over them.... I may also have solved the Upload to Gallery problem, but that needs further testing... It was definitely the fault of OneDrive not Pb. I have relocated Dennis's original email regarding the watercolour Still Life class but it shows only Pt1 and the clock is set at zero because the class has been held.  So I'm still no wiser as to when Pt2 is scheduled. I guess I'll just have to be patient watch the website for updates.  I check Pb every night anyway. Thanks once again for your help. You  and Val have cleared up a lot of puzzles for me. I hope I can reciprocate one day.  :)

What a pity, I could not take part in the last still life live class. It began at 3 AM German time (UTC +2) and that was a bit too early for me. The class conducted before this ( grapes, wineglass in acrylic) began around 10 PM german Time (UTC +2) where I managed to take part. I hope the next class is around 10 PM german time again.  That will be around 10 AM (UTC +12) in Auckland?
I am just giving a feedback Dennis and Nolan! I liked to take part in the live class!  :smiley6600:

Gita,
In today's email there is the link to see the replay of the first lesson.

Yes 3am is way to early!  Catch up the replay during daytime.   This one will be at supper time for most in Noth America.  Will catch a bit while cooking but dinner time is sacred, family time.

it looks to me that Dennis and Nolan regularly change day and time for their OAL classes, which is great as we can all catch some.  The last 2 OAL has been Mon, then Tue, so maybe the next one will be Wed (which I can never attend).  I like that, for a while last year they were all on the same day and I could not attend any.

But the time is more difficult to accomodate,  they are about 10 h ahead of you.

My house guests are still here (such a nice visit--we have all known each other since we were 13!) and this coming week, Holy Week, will be busy, but seeing your painting has given me the extra little incentive to get on with it.

After much consideration, I have decided not to complete this course. NOT because I don't love the classes or the subject matter. Both are excellent. But this is so similar to many paintings I have already done, and I decided I needed to go for something different in my next one. But I am very eager to see what wonderful results you all produce.

Danielle - yours is stunning, too!! I'm so impressed!

Gita - I can't believe you did all you did in a day - you're amazing! I agree with Mea though, I think it's better without the halo. Other than that, bravo!!

Coming along famously, if you are going to keep the 'glow' around the chimney you may need to take out a bit more of the dark from close on the glass, and light up the back a bit...after it is lit of course  ;) . Not sure I said that right.  ???    If it doesn't make sense don't worry about it.

Beautiful still life, everyone.  I never got beyond the first class, but hope to get back to it soon.

This is the start of my version of Dennis's Still Life with Pomegranates Lesson. I've failed to follow instructions from the very beginning, because I didn't find the template and drew my own version. Then when the first lesson came along I tried to adapt Dennis's instructions to my drawing and became quite confused. I further complicated matters by sitting down one afternoon and thinking I could remember his instructions, sigh! So now all the colours are wrong and the shadows are too deep. I'm now wondering if I should now plough on trying to adapt his instructions or should I start again?

So I have two versions for printing:-). One with the lamp lit and one unlit.

I admit though that I was a bit dizzy after all that painting and correcting yest.

Linley, its easy to follow the instructions. You can still follow the you tube classes and apply Dennis´s instructions to yours. Slide the bar in you tube video till you come to the part where you need the instructions.

Yours is coming along well!  O0

For your unopened main focus pomogranate open class 2.
For the open pomogranets, the "pups" and the lamp bottom see class 3.
For one of the lamp glasses: class 4
For table cloth: class 5

Hope this helps. You need a lot of patience  :painting: :painting: :painting: if you wish a realistic result. The main focus is on the unopened pomogranate and a bit on the closed ones (I think) and the "pups" like Dennis says.  :2funny:

At least now I know that I am capable of sitting for long hours to paint and Dennis´s classes were so fascinating that I could not stop moving from one class to another.

Gita,

Hard to decide which version is better.  I just feel that the halo of light behind the chimney is too distracting from the beauty of the rest of the painting.  Maybe if it were more of a hazy light with less defined edges, it would not draw the eye so much.

As for every other element in the painting, they are all superb, so masterfully done.

Great work, Gita.  You, Danielle, and Linley have really done so well on what looks to be a very difficult piece.

awful photo... must be because of the flash. The white streaks in to background don't exist. the rough brushwork doesn't show up to the naked eye either. I don't see how anyone could critique it usefully, so I probably shouldn't put it up on the forum.  But I think it is finished. Just like to say thankyou Dennis for demonstrating that watercolour doesn't have to be wishy washy and pastel. or wet in wet, or all pink, purple and aqua. Loved the lesson, even if it did take me ages to complete. I learned so much technique too in that month of Sundays.

PS: Dennis I followed your advice and used brush for the masking fluid, after dunking it in water, and it stuck to the brush, fortunately not my best one!  ::)
What did I do wrong? But you are right about the hairdryer.  The masking fluid came off very smoothly, despite the heat used to dry it. Handy! Also loved the way you show EVERYTHING, even peeling of the border tape at the end. O0 ::)

I think you did a nice job too, Linley! Perhaps you can retake the photo during a different time of day or in different lighting in your home. I often have to do that to get the photo to look like the painting!

Linley, take the photo without the flash. All modern cameras have the flash directly in line with the axis of the lens, which is actually bad news, as the light bounces back directly into the lens. That light patch is the light bouncing back into the lens.

I wet the brush first BEFORE dipping into the masking fluid. After a few dips I completely clean the brush before continuing. The big secret is to constant clean the brush as you apply the masking fluid. Take careful note how I do it in the videos.

A little better, photographed in daylight, but I think I've wrecked my previously smooth velvety background by overpainting it to try and hide a few filled in water spots.  I was hoping it would look like curtains, and the painting itself does look a little better than the photo. Any suggestions? Could I blot out the whole background and completely repaint it from scratch, or would that ruin it even more?   And Dennis you are right: I did forget to clean my masking fluid brush at frequent intervals while actually applying the mask. We live and learn.

Linley, leave the background as it is. The camera is much more sensitive than the eye, because the brain blocks out a lot of the blue reflections. What looks good in the real can look terrible in the photograph, and I'm talking mainly of black here. I often have to be very careful when photographing black. I usually have to turn the painting around such that there is no strong light bouncing off it.

Post by: linley.plester on May 13, 2017, 09:56:59 PM
Hi Dennis.... (and everyone else) Thanks for your kind words. Dennis, I did turn the painting around, and  the sstreaks appeared in another section of the background, proving it is mainly the light. I photographed it again today when we actually had sunshine, and the photos improved considerably. However If I examine it with a critical eye in various locations around the house, it still looks blotchy, so, in for a penny.... I've carefully put on masking fluid and made a mask out of greaseproof paper which I'll weigh down with lead fishing weights. Then I'm going to spritz it and lightly try stroking it horizontally.

I think it did improve a little. Although the camera is playing tricks again because the natural light is low. I feel better about it anyway.  You are right about the blue... I couldn't get my background as dark as I wanted with my greens, so I sneaked in a bit of indigo, which no doubt gives it an extra bluish cast.
This time I carefully followed your instructions and washed the brush assiduously during the mask application, and ended up with a perfectly clean brush. Also, as I removed this lot of masking fluid, I discovered I had missed tiny fragments of the last lot, and so had to do a few more touch up jobs around some of the edges... So all your warnings came to roost, if I can mix my metaphors. Lessons learned for the future I hope.

You  all must be heartily sick of my version of this lesson by now. However I have made some slight improvement I think.  Some areas of the dark background are shiny and some areas are stubbornly flat and dull, despite repeated re- washing/stroking with a large soft brush. It's as if there is no gum Arabic on the flat spots. (I even considered glazing the whole thing with a coating of gum Arabic, but as I've never used gum arabic as a glaze before, I chickened out. Can anyone tell me why these repaired accidental  :confused:water spots are so flat?

:2funny: Val. Saunders St Cuthbert's Mill 140lb. on a block. I don't think many other papers would have stood up to he repeated wettings. It did buckle a bit, but the flat colour spots seem to quite localized, where I accidentally dripped water on the background while painting the foreground.  I did wonder if somehow I could have ruined the sizing of the paper with too heavy an application of paint, but there is no sign of wear or abrasion. (I've read a lot about paper strengths and weaknesses, but don't have much real time experience.) Or could they be a sort of grease spot?... finger marks perhaps? :thankyou:

Thanks everyone for the compliments on the framed version of "Still Life with Pomegranates" (that's the name, Val!) The image is approx 10x10 - framed it's 16x16. Got lots of compliments on it at the show on Saturday, but no buyers.

However I did sell 11 paintings that day - so left a very happy artist!  Interestingly enough, several of the paintings I sold were some of my oldest - 2 years old! As I always say, one must have a lot of patience to be a selling artist - sometimes you just have to wait for the right collector to show up!

Linley - I'd like to suggest you take the class again. I think with all of the advice you've received, I bet doing it one more time will give you the results you're looking for. Actually, Sharon, taking the class again is on my to do list... but somehow I seem to be stalled on correcting this and another painting (my pop art lady with the twisted nose and claw-like fingers). If I do it again, I'd like to try it in acrylics, but first, I'll have to take The PB class on using acrylics like watercolour. I do think I might give the poor still life a rest for a while and try looking at it with fresh eyes. It definitely looked healthier this morning.  I had actually considered doing a Val and carefully cutting off the foreground and then pasting it back onto a new painted background. (Val said she once chopped off the bottom inch or so of a canvas.)  By the way, thanks for helping me out with the understanding with Maria. You too Stoney. :thankyou:

Linley, saw your background - it looks like the background is  lit with additional light. Its just looks like a different painting! I would keep it the way it is and frame it!
I see it like this.  O0

But if you are unhappy with the background, you could use maybe Gouache or acrylics to get a homogeneous wash.

Thankyou Gita.... They are great suggestions. However I think I have managed to fix most of it by repeatedly gently washing over it, first in one direction, then the other, and I'm actually planning to frame it! I really appreciate the help and encouragement my PB friends have given me. I will keep your suggestions in mind however for future stuff-ups!
