Title: Fi attempts Line and Wash
Post by: Fiona on February 17, 2017, 04:27:30 PM
Inspired by Mea and her great progress in line and wash, I thought I would give it a go....  I'll start off with something simple like a poppy .... Well that didn't go according to plan, as I found myself sketching a scent from a photo I took a year or two ago.... of a fisherman's cottage... It needs a boat, I thought, so I trawled through some more photo's I'd taken and added a boat to it.... all sketched freehand and in an afternoon  :)  So here it is then, I present you with "Poppy"... ahem....

I'm not too happy with the trees, but other than that I quite like it. Although it's more of a watercolour sketch with pen thn it is a line and wash  :2funny:

well done Fiona,  I would just add a bit more colour to the front of the house to show it is in the shade.

Oh, Fi, this is quite precious.

I think it's lovely - the little cottage is so quaint.  Not quite sure about what the boat is doing up against the house, though.  That should make for a lively story.  Where's John Box when you need him???

So happy to have you in the Line and Wash Club.

Thank you ladies for your lovely comments :)

I have added a shadow wash over the front of the house as you suggested Danielle and I think it looks better - thank you for that one.

Yes, Fi, the wash made a considerable difference.

I just love that little cottage.

This is lovely Fi ! Love it.

The one thing I would be mindful of, and I do have to remind myself of it when doing line & wash.... is that the w/c must be kept as a light wash or it does indeed become a w/c painting!
Overall you have done an excellent job, one addition you could make if so inclined.... paint 'Poppy's" name on her transom!        ^-^

Mea, those cottages are well-know down in the Cape Province in South Africa, along the coast, and are called Fishermen's Cottages, hence the boat. A very popular painting subject.

Bravo, Fiona - and an excellent 'first time" painting! I bet your poppy wasn't as bad as you think - hope you try that again!

I love it!   :flowers: :flowers:

My only comment would be to shadow a bit more the front part of the cheminey, as it is also in the shadow as your lovely house is.

Well it seems like I have well and truly caught the line and wash bug....

This one is of a Tea Room in Arniston in South Africa which I visited a year or two back and have only just got round to painting. It's another of the fishermen's cottages but this one has been turned into a Tea Room come Arts and Crafts shop. Quite a quaint little place.

I had to splice together 2 different photo's as the building on the left behind the main house was an eyesight in the original picture and it looked dreadful. So I applied my artistic license and did away with it  :)

Oh, Fi, this is lovely.  Line and wash lends itself beautifully to nostalgic places.

I think one think that I've learned - and Dennis reinforced it recently - is that there cannot be too much defined by the watercolor or the work then becomes a watercolor, rather than line and wash.

That said, I think the umbrellas have a bit too much defining color for line and wash.

Remember, I am new at this, too, so I could be wrong.  I am still struggling with it.

Indeed Mea, the ink/pencil, whatever you use in your line and wash drawing, needs to be dominant over the w/c wash. Thinner washes than you would normally use are what is required.

It took me so long to get bolder with my colours....I sometimes find it hard to remember to keep them thin!
Beautiful scene Fi, just be mindful of the colour intensity.

Whether it is a Line & Wash or a WC, I find it is beautiful.

At my level, I cannot worry to much about where the line is on that continuum.  But I am starting to see that the L&W has the fluidity that I had admired so much in what I thought were WC in the past.  Oh well, I will get there when I get there.

Here is my last fisherman's cottage scene, I have tried to tone down the intensity of the colours.... but it's so hard when all you want to do is splash colour over everything  ;D

Now I need to have a trawl through my photo's to see what I can paint next  :)

Beautiful Fi !  O0 Your ink work shows through beautifully. The crosshatching in the doorway and on the brown bin looks great! I should say you've got this line and wash business sorted nicely.

All of these remind me of a very old copy I used to have of Wind In The Willows.... just need Mr. Toad, Rat, and Mole!!!

This line and wash was taken from a quick sketch over the weekend. There is a small village near me called Burton Dasset (sounds like a small furry animal) and there is a church here dating beck to the 13 century. It's quite a quaint little place and I was inspired by this window.... so there I was with my sketchbook and pencils in a church graveyard, scribbling frantically while trying to keep the sketchbook from blowing away  :)  I may have to have a return visit as there are so many things that caught my eye

As always crits, comments and suggestions for improvement are more than welcome

Fi,

Love the church window.   So simple but so elegant! Took real skill to make that look so real.

Also, saw the two cottages further down the page.  Don't know how I missed those earlier.  Great work.

Your work is starting to look like it was done by the old masters!

Excellent, Fi!  :yippee: :yippee: :yippee: 13th century, huh? The oldest church around me only goes back to the late 17th century. That's pretty old for this country.

A most beautiful P&I work     I love it.  I can imagine you in the Church court drawing and fighting the element.  Hope you had a good time working outside... just like the Masters  :yippee:

P.S.  Some history:
- Canada will turn 150 y.o. this year.  All National parks are open free of charge until end of Dec.
- According to Goggle, the oldest building around here was a Fort build in 1878 (only a replica remain, it burned down)  The first recorded "Canadian" building was build in 1608 in Quebec.  The oldest building still in use  is a seminary in downtown Montreal and dated from 1684.

I have been invited to a friend's wedding vow renewal ceremony in May, and it just so happens to be their 25th anniversary as well. Coming up with a suitable gift was a nightmare until I hit upon the idea of painting the church the ceremony will be taking place in....

Good job it's only round the corner from me, as I was there in the week with my sketchbook, scribbling away like a mad thing and fighting the elements again! I made a few initial sketches of the church and decided on this view as it was the most interesting. I did leave out a few of the gravestones as they were starting to look like the main focal point - not something I was looking for!

I tried doing this in pastels first, but it seemed a little too heavy for the subject, so here I go with line and wash again - it could become addictive...

Any comments and suggestions for improvements are more than welcome, so I can get this one finished and off to the framers.

Cheers
