YAY, Diane.  You did it.

You might want to make your treeline more irratic - like a heartline monitor.

Hope your fisherman has a good catch!

You're on your way to being a sketch artist.

Does anybody know why the drawing shows up sideways sometimes? Am I doing something wrong ?

Diane,

If you took it with your phone sideways, that may be the problem.

When I take a sideways photo, I email it to myself and right it up in Microsoft PAINT.  Then save it to your photo files.

You sure are...  but you should post your drawings under the correct Forum.  I.E. under pencil drawing, start your own 'stetchhabit Let us draw'  post.

You will get a lot of comments and critis there...
Good luck!

 You are off to a good start and obviously having lots of fun.  ;) Your berries look good. If you want to make them really dynamic, try softening the hard lines around the berries and darken the dark areas as you gradually get lighter toward the highlight.

Getting rid of the outlined look will make them look more realistic.  O0

You have given your fish his own sense of style.  I love your scaly-looking scumbling.

Do try to blend out the outline look around the edge of the fins.

Diane,

You are bringing back so many memories from the Let's Draw Course.

Some good - like the scumbled fish.  Loved that one.

Today - a bad memory - I, too, struggled with that window in the barn.

You are making good progress.    I salute you for doing it freehand on this.

You go, girl!

:heeha: Wow, going great guns Diane! Good on you for freehanding this, well done.  O0

I had a few issues with that side window as well. The shading inside needs to be darkest at the top and lighter toward the bottom as more light is blocked by the open flap nearer the top. Hope that makes sense. Your drawing is very neat and tidy. Good job.

Excellent, Diane       A  bit of history and trivia:

That barn is actually dilapidated and very close to where I used to live outside Auckland. It used to be a roadside farm stall. That right hand side was a "window" that flapped down to form a counter on which the farmer placed the veggies for sale. It is broken and can't close properly.

Good horse, Diane, but it needs more dark contrasts.

We were all afraid of the darks when we started, but you'll soon realize how necessary they are.

Good job, Diane.   I agree with Mea, more darks required. Also, take a look at the mane. Extend it beyond the reins. Right now you have the mane fending abruptly where the reins crosses the neck. Try extending the mane past the reins;, or shorten it. Iit will look more natural. Also, extend the horse's mouth all the way back to the bit.

Diane,

Speaking as a tea drinker, I think it's a great composition for a still life.

Speaking as an artist, you still need to go DARKER!  Especially on the insides of the teapot and vase? (Cruet? Pitcher?)

Overall, you are doing such a great job.  I think I can safely speak for other PBers in that we are really enjoying your progress.

    Diane, you are doing well and I understand perfectly, about the fear of going darker for I am still a little timid but am getting better. Val gave me a wonderful idea and that is to use a darker pencil e.g. if you are told to use a 6B use an 8B instead for this definitely does help.

Pretty good job, Diane! Just a couple of questions. Does  the pitcher have an unusual shape to its opening? Or is it a perspective problem? The strings on the teabags confuse me. Do the  bags have double strings or is one supposed to be a shadow? If shadow, they fall improperly based on where the light originates.:)
Title: Re: Sketchabit's Lets Draw Course
Post by: Sketchabit on February 23, 2017, 10:55:24 AM
Yes Steve it is an antique creamer n I had a lot of trouble with it , it's has a very wide mouth to it and inside has a very narrow neck . It was hard to give the depth it desperately needs. The extra strings are a shadow n I think I did them to dark so it threw off the original string .

Yes Patricia !!! I stress about it being to dark and maybe that's one of the issues is my pencils never thought of that , the highest I have is 6B and I always start of light and try and build from there because starting so dark looks so awlful maybe just something I need to just dive into  :thankyou:

:thankyou: mea! Looks like maybe I need to purchase some darker pencils  or press harder . I have been going along pretty good on this course and have really enjoyed it but this one has stumped me and now that I look at picture I don't like the arrangement of items , it's boring haha and that's not me !  :2funny:
Title: Re: Sketchabit's Lets Draw Course
Post by: mea hamo pena on February 23, 2017, 12:35:13 PM
Diane,

I agree that the best was is to start out light and be sure that you have everything right before bring in the darks.  It's better to do layer upon layer than going dark all at once.

Keep at it.  You are doing so well.

Diane you are doing great :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:
What I want you to concentrate on now is getting more contrast into your shadings. For example the neck of your horse and the shading of the tea pots above - all need more contrasts between the dark and the light tonal values. If you add more contrast you will see that they will look rounder. Maybe practice shading a sphere or two O0

I don't know enough yet to provide feedback, but think it looks awesome! If I can learn to draw 1/4th this good, I will be happy!

Thank you tony ! And welcome  :welcome: Oh you will for sure , the techniques that paint basket offers & simple instruction are by far one of the best around , for me anyways , I am not that far ahead of you in the course & have really learned so much so you will get there.  :)

I really struggled with this ! I re-did this 4 times , something about making trees that is hard for me , hopefully I will get better after this , After looking endlessly I have lost my 1st tree at beginning of course to compare. Any comments or thoughts are greatly appreciated  :)

If it's any consolation, Diane, I had problems with trees, too.  Just kept practicing until I got them right.   I look closely, study the overall shape, make a rough sketch, then refine it with details and shading.

You can do this!

Diane, I think you and I share a similar challenge! We forget that trees are surrounded by their boughs, and leaves!!! I know, it was a shock to me as well.  :o

When doing trees I still catch myself out at times.    Take solace, the more you draw trees the less likely you are to leave their backsides showing. Nothing quite like a well dressed tree!  ;)

It will come.  :promise:

Diane, hopefully this will give you hope and not totally horrify you.  ;D   This landscape course that Dennis did made the world of difference to me. The first one, I was just so thrilled they looked like trees!  :yippee:   The second one I got a bit cocky and just kept adding, and adding, finally stopped myself before the poor thing fell over!  :2funny:    So you see, it will get better! Trust me, if I can do it, I know that you can too!   O0
