Title: Live Demo in Pastel
Post by: dennis on January 13, 2017, 08:26:59 PM
I will be demonstrating a late afternoon Autumn Scene, with a dramatic cloud formation and reflections in a large expanse of water.  Sorry, for VIP Members only. The countdown can be seen on the OAL website:
http://onlineartlessons.com (http://onlineartlessons.com)

My paper will be approx A3 size and white 90lb (200gsm) CP watercolor paper.
Soft Pastels only. Blues, purples, oranges, yellows, white, black and a touch of green.

If you want to paint-a-long
You may use any paper and size you prefer as there will be no template - easy sketching  O0

(http://www.paintbasket.com/members/Smileys/webby/huh.gif) I always get a little afeared when you say 'easy', to me it's like when you say 'slow'!   (http://www.paintbasket.com/members/Smileys/webby/2funny.gif)

Oh well...in for a penny in for a pound, I'm in! Let the fun begin!   (http://www.paintbasket.com/members/Smileys/webby/yippee.gif)   Where's Patricia?  :tooth: She should be party to this free-for-all!   :heeha:

Pastels!  Party and pastels, or is it party with pastels?  :2funny:

Never tried this medium but I would like to see how Dennis will make is easy.  I should be able to catch the first hour, if I hop on the ferrie instead of swimming off this island.  Faster!  :boat:  I may attend.

Hope you make it Annie, I always love to see people who know as much about a subject/medium as I do at the classes!  :2funny:   I have a great feeling this one is going to be a 'riot' of flying colour! (on my part)  :attacked: :2funny:

Hope you can all make it to the "party" which should be a riot, not only with flying colours but with Val also being our "Cheerleader"!!  :yippee:   All jokes aside, it should be a very interesting class.

Gorgeous!!!  Dennis.  I went and bought soft pastels today.  There was a limited selection, so I am not sure these are very good.  ALPHACOLOR  24 Soft Pastels.

Unfortunately, I will be traveling on the bus to Honolulu International Airport while the PARTY is going on, so hope it is going to be available at some point after the PARTY!

Oops! I actually posted mine under an older topic I had in the pastel classes (OAL Lessons)

Anyway, without further ado.... my repost here!

Here's what I ended up with!

Great fun, powder all over, very colourful....I did mention a riot of colour!  (http://www.paintbasket.com/members/Smileys/webby/2funny.gif)

I didn't get as far as reflections, but learned that I need a LOT more practice!   (http://www.paintbasket.com/members/Smileys/webby/thankyou.gif) Dennis & Nolan.

Zayn you did a great job keeping up with Dennis, I got behind in the line drawing!  :2funny: If we hadn't run into some techie difficulties....I wouldn't have gotten this far.
Beware....when Dennis says 'easy' or 'slow', it just means you're in for a wild ride!  :D     :2funny:

Good job

Val, sorry to disappoint you but my "masterpiece" is no such thing. My rocks are horrible but I tried and I enjoyed the lesson so that is what it is all about, enjoying what we do even if it turns out not as we expected and hoped for. I watch Dennis just put a little stroke down and it transforms into something beautiful. I do the same thing and it looks like a mess.  :crazy2:

Very nice, Patricia.  Nice blending.

Not having seen yet what the rocks are actually supposed to look like, I cannot comment on them.

The rest of the painting looks really good.

Wow!! What a blast that class was  :)  Even though I turned up late and missed the beginning, I have never worked so fast before and you should have seen the mess afterwards......

So here is my version of the live class speed painting session. As you can see the trees on the left look like mud monsters rearing up out of the sludge  :) Lesson learned from this one - keep your fingers clean or you get mud..  :)

Fiona, still a very beautiful painting. Well done

Post by: Fiona on January 22, 2017, 11:53:39 AM
Thank you all for your kind comments  :) I think we all did rather well in keeping up with Mr D - the speed painter  :2funny:

Dennis's comment about doing this again in your own time set the ole grey cells working.....  So using the live class piece as an underpainting to work from, I spent a bit more time refining and tweaking, again I set a timer of 2 hours to stop myself fiddling. And this is the result - basically 4 hours of intense work without the faffing around I normally do!! I even added the birdies in the sky ... :)

As always crits, comments etc are most welcome

Cheers
Fi
