Title: Lets draw Mez :-)
Post by: Mez on September 10, 2016, 10:09:11 PM
Hi Guys,

I started the course at the beginning of the week. I've loved reading through previous posts in here and looking at all your drawings. I've now built up the courage to post my two from this week.

Thanks!

Mez.

Very nice, Mez! O0 O0

The rocks are very good. They just need some darker shadings.

The berries are "the berries"! Just work on your shading. It's a little bandy. Shoot for making smoother transitions from light to dark.

I'm looking forward to seeing more from you!

:welcome: Hey there Mez. Welcome to Paintbasket. The Lets draw course is fabulous. You will amazed at what you will be drawing in a very short time. You did very well on both of you drawings.

Steve gave you good recommendations for making nice drawings even better. The gradual blending will make the berries look rounder and mor dimensional. You got the dimensional feel beautifully in the rocks. It will be even more dramatic if you go very dark in the shadow areas.  O0

I look forward to your next drawing.  ;)

:bigwelcome: to the course Mez! You're off to an excellent start, don't be afraid to push those darks.... I think almost all of us started out the same way! Come to the dark side.... it's awesome!  :heeha:      ;D

Thanks Val, I think I have made improvements on the berries. I then re did the rocks but I think its lighter than my original lol. Back to the drawing board  ;)  I'll post if I think there is markable difference otherwise I may just move to the mug for a change.

Don't let yourself get stuck too long Mez, you'll find you will start to use more and more of the techniques as you move along. Take what you have learned from this piece and carry it along into the next. Then you will sit back one day and go... wow!  :heeha: Did I do that?! It all comes together like magic! A change is as good as a rest and keeps up our interest so go get that mug!  ;D

:welcome: Mez great start. it's not easy. As not everyone can do it.
As my friend said one day  "my brain and hand are just not connected" no matter how much she tried she could not draw what she saw, no matter how much i encouraged her she gave up and said she had talents in other ways.
You are showing a good talent.

:bigwelcome: Mez, it's great to have you here and on the course :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:

You are off a flying start - especially with those rocks :heeha:

The berries are great too - just add some more contrast to the berries themselves by darkening the darkest part and then shading towards the highlight area O0

:gl: with the rest of the course O0

Hi Peoples, so after a little drawing break I'm back at it. You may notice some interesting shapes  ;D as I didn't trace, but I had to give it a go  ;)

I still love checking out this forum all the time and admiring all your work!

Mez,

Happy to see you posting your work.  Well shaped for freehand work.

Your scumbled fish looks  good. Try to avoid dark lines (like the ones we call "coloring book lines").  Be sure to blend the dark into the light so that the line does not stand out.

Love your little teddy bear.

Ok here is the Barn sketch, this I found fun but challenging with perspective and make believe grasses  ;D

Nice work, Mes.

You are bringing back old memories from the time I did these drawings.  I had a devil of a time with that barn window!  Yours looks better.

Keep at it.

Nice job, Mez!    You should add some more contrast to the right support on the window awning to make it stand out a little more against the similarly toned background.

Nice job freehanding.  O0 I see your barn became a little elongated..... mine kind of ended up a bit squishy!  ;D

Well done, you're doing famously.

:flowers: Keep up the good work, MEZ!  I loved learning how to draw from Nolan and Dennis!  It was like MAGIC to me when I saw that just graphite pencil and paper could create something!  And I never drew anything ever before PB!

Hi All!

I found the resizing exercise fun although I've discovered I need a new ruler, you live and learn!

Any comments welcome as always  :)

Love your little squirrel.  I think he did a back flip after you posted him and he landed on his feet.

Yours has a nice natural flow to it.  So smooth.

Here is my extra practice pic. I don't feel I know what to do with the feet so I left them...  ;D

Mez,

Good job.

Like the sexy little swag you gave the beak.

Whenever I get stumped by feet, I hide them in grass.

Another great drawing!     it is hard to see the feet for the shadows.  I did a google search for duck brown from behind and found this showing two ducks standing.  It may help you to see the feet in the reference better.

Funny Mea, that was the first thing I thought of as well! Hide the feet!!  :2funny:

Great drawing Mez.... other than the feet!  ;)

looks great Mez, well done

Just straighten the top of the beak, yours is too curved O0

For the feet - a good trick is to add blades of grass in that area. You then not only don't have to draw the feet, the grass anchors the bird as well O0

Thanks guys.
Mysti that link is helpful! I will however try and 'ground' the duck with some grass or something as recommended, possibly drawing the feet in first for practice from that link. Ahh the possibilities haha. I will also amend the beak!

Horse exercise,  bridle = difficult but fun  :)

Nice work on the horse and bridle, Mez.

Remember what we said about not being afraid of the darks!  It's the contrasts that really make the drawing pop.  Look at the original and yours side by side.  Are their places on the reference photo that are darker than yours? (Maybe inside the ears? Nostril? Thin shadow under bridle?)  Or just squint at the drawing and see if it there is enough range of tonal values?

Aloha
