Post by: nolan on October 27, 2011, 02:58:42 PM
If you spot a bargain on art supplies, etc? Post it here.

When going through this thread, just realise that most of the items here are time sensitive, so check the dates, etc.

Posts will be deleted here every week or so to get rid of expired bargains.

For anyone who doesn't already know this, you can go online to Hobby Lobby and Michaels and print off coupons.  Hobby Lobby usually has a 40% off on 1 item and that is on a regular basis.  Michaels, I believe has several different options for discounts.  They are all printable.

Micheal's also has a 'Senior Citizens Day' as well. If you're a old fart like me, Tuesdays will get you an additional discount across the board.  O0

If anyone has local fellow painters, think about combining orders with friends for free shipping, etc. on sites such as Jerry's Artarama, Cheap Joe's, Dick Blick and possibly many others.  Those are here in the states. Also, combining orders really helps on mat board since you have to buy 25 or so per order.

Thanks, Val!  I usually do check around before I order.  I don't use W & N watercolors so I didn't look!  I use Daniel Smith, because they are located in my hometown, and I get a 10% student discount.  They're great paints, and local, which makes it easy for me!  If I want to cross the bridge to Seattle, then I can also shop at Dick Blick, which is a fun shopping trip!

Speaking of student discount, I get that at several art stores around here - I found that out when I went in with a supply list for a computer art class i was taking.  They asked if I was a student, and I said, well, sort of, an online class.  That was good enough for them!  So, now I always tell them I'm taking an online art class (if I really am, which I always am!) and I get that discount.  So, it might not hurt to ask at whatever store you shop at, and maybe you'll save some money!  I never thought of being a student at my age, and online!  WOW - makes me feel young again!!

Anything I purchase usually has to be ordered via the internet. Since shipping is so expensive, I only order when in an area that I know has reliable shipping. So that only happens maybe once a year...twice if I'm lucky.
Otherwise I must make do with whatever I can find locally...wherever I am!   :D

Will look into 'student discount' if available for internet orders.   O0

I recently started to paint on canvas panels instead of stretched canvas, which means that the final results need to be framed.  I wanted to buy five frames for the Big 5 painting lessons, but I did not want to pay a lot for the frames. I looked on line but was unsure about whether the companies were reputable.   I finally found a supplier on line that not only offered wholesale prices but was also in my neighbourhood. I was able to both visit them and talk to them on the phone.  To purchase from them you do not need to own a business but must order a minimum number of frames--in this case 5,  sometimes delivery is included.   I ordered the frames and I am quite happy with the results.  The 16 x 20 inch solid wood frame, along with hanging hardware only cost me $17.00 each.  I could not find anything in the stores near that price.  They also sell mats--in small or larger quantity, which means that you don't have to fool around with cutting them yourself, if you can't afford to have them cut professionally.  Their website in Canada is matshop.ca, they also have a US based website called matshop.com.  I can quite easily say that I recommend them.

Ahhh, did I miss something here? I buy Strathmore watercolour paper - yellow covers 300 series and the brown, 400 series, but I never thought to use it for drawing on. I find it rather rough (it is cold pressed) and thought it would have too much tooth for pencil. . . . but what do I know. The 400 series does have a smoother side but still. . . . . Or, do they make a drawing paper and that is what you are talking about?
I use Grumbacher Multi-Media Drawing paper. medium weight (77lbs) and moderate tooth. Works for me.

So, to further educate me, Strathmore makes drawing paper and uses the same coloured covers as the watercolour pads? I'll have to look in Michaels next time I'm in the city. It would be nice to have actual drawing paper!

I only know their drawing paper. I didn't even know that they made watercolour paper.

Strathmore isn't widely obtainable in the UK.

Since I'm new at this, I wanted to be able to try it for a while before I invested too much into it.

I found that ROSS Shop for Less (Discount store in the US, not sure where else) has "starter" kinds of art supplies for all mediums - not all, and not all the time.  The stuff is very inexpensive, so I usually buy two of everything so I can get friends to learn painting with me.  Until I found their inexpensive canvasses, I was blocking a good canvas into four smaller canvases, so I could try doing things in different blocks.  Like a block for clouds, a block for ocean waves, etc.

For a beginner, it's an inexpensive way to get started.

So is getting scrap matboard from a local art framer.  Give each side a couple coats of clear acrylic spray paint and paint away.  Do keep in mind there's nothing archival about this.  I've no idea how long the paintings will stay viable.  You can do the same thing with newsprint and cardboard, but these will be even less viable.

You can photograph these works for time wise painting skill and topic progression.

I've done well answering local adds for art supplies. I got all my initial set of oils and brushes for $20. I've since bought more oils and acrylics, a studio easel, 2 french easels, 2 pleine aire easels and sold the easels I didn't need so that I'm actually in profit on the whole deal!
Yesterday I answered another add and got
All these oil paints some unopened and all soft in the tubes
All these acrylics and inks
There was also a huge box of brushes but whoever owned them before must never have cleaned a brush! Every last one of them is caked in hardened oils.
Plus a a big hinged tool box the oils were in, and 2 tupperware boxes the acrylics and brushes were in.
Do you think I did OK for $40 US???
I'll take them to my portrait class this week and see if anyone wants to buy any paint cheap!!

For those of you in the USA.  In case you are not aware.  Michaels accepts competitors coupons.  So collect your Joanns coupons too.  Also apart from the ones that you get in the newspapers and emails,  you can load, Michaels, Joanns, and Retailmenot apps on your phone. (Look for Michaels coupons under Michaels store on Retailmenot) Each of them show the up-to-date coupons.  You can only use one coupon per transaction.  Depending who is on the register, the person may allow you to do multiple transactions one after the other.  Others let you do 2 and then you have to get in line again.  but who cares when you are getting 50% off your art supplies.  I took my husband with me the other day.  Used coupons from each of the methods mentioned above. (By the way, I loaded his phone with the apps mentioned so that added another 3 coupons)  We went bankrypt saving money LOL.

Yep, DeSerres is a good art supply store. Very general stock, everything from kids crayons & paints to fine oil paints and canvases. It's moderately expensive, but no more so than Michael's which is basically a hobby shop. They are only in larger Canadian centres, Halifax, Toronto, and the like.
As they are on-line, you can check to find out if they carry what you want, and I have found the staff to be very helpful over the phone. No shipping charge on orders over (I think) $75.00 which is a no brainer for me in an art store!!!

Aaron bros has a 50% off one item, 25% off entire purchase and 70% off all non-multi pack canvases for this weekend.

Dick Blick is doing 15% off orders of $99 and 25% off $159 and free shipping on both but that price needs to be hit after discount, so orders of $118 and $214 get the discount and free shipping.

Jerry's Artarama is $15 off $99, $35 off $159,and $50 off $250 with free shipping on all..  offer ends Sunday.

Daniel Smith is 20% off and free shipping on $125 or more, same deal as Blick's with the after discount @ $125.   Also has lesser deals for less but not with free shipping.

Those are just the bulk deals, all the stores have special prices on select items along with those discounts.

I just ordered a few brushes and some watercolors, was easily over $50, so the discount applied.  More than covered my shipping costs.

At Hobby lobby they have 2 oz acrylics in the hobbiest section for under a dollar today but I don't know the different between them and the Basics brand I usually purchase for a much higher price. I wounder if that can be used to tint my regular colors for a cost effective color mix?

I am half sorry I went to Hobby Lobby today-they are dumping some good supplies and I gorged.  :P

Generals woodless graphite (2 pack) normally $5.99 going for $2.15-mine only had 4B and 6B.

Zebra MLP mechanical lead pencils 9mm SQUARE lead-it says for test taking, but it reminds me of how Nolan and Dennis sharpen regular pencil leads. 2B with 4 extra leads and 2 extra erasers. Was $2.49 now $.89

Pilot Parallel Pen with 2 cartridges of ink, converter for cleaning the pen and nib cleaner.  Dropped from $10.99 to $3.95.  Different nib widths and all the refill cartridges on clearance as well ($4.99 down to $1.79)

A bunch of other pens, markers and drawing supplies on clearance-I'm guessing they won't be carrying them anymore from the looks of the prices.

Michaels has been doing a lot of dumping of their artist quality supplies as of late.  Today I went in for ONE canvas and walked out with a whole bunch of paint brushes.

All of the Princeton Neptune watercolor brushes are in the clearance bin along with some interesting 'freestyle' brushes from Liquitex.

I saw those neptune brushes. Are they any good? They were at least 1/2 off by my house.

Tuesday Morning in the US has some interesting art supplies for sale (they are a big re-seller of higher end 'stuff' in the US).

I found tracing paper on the roll (12"x50' @ $6) and some watercolor paper (140lb 12 sheet 9x12 $4) made by Seth Cole. I had never heard of them, but after doing a search on them they look like a high end drafting supply manufacturer. 1/2 to 3/4 off normal retail.
They also have Koh-i-noor pastel pencils (6 for $6) and drawing pencils. The drawing pencils look like Tombows, but the quality is not the same. A tin of 12 5b-5h was $8.

They also had an assortment of Grumbacher watercolor brushes. The Academy brand. 3 brushes for $2-$4. I don't like the natural ones-a lot of hair fallout, but the synthetic or 'ok'.
