Pencil Drawing Course    RSS Items RSS Comments

I've been drawing for quite a few years, but I haven't had any formal training. I decided to take it to the next level in doing realistic drawings (my forte tends to be cartooning) and I found this course here. It has helped already.

24 Glass and Water Drawing 02
24 Glass and Water Drawing 02
I thought that this one would be simpler, but it had its own complexities that made for some difficulties. I originally started drawing this with a dark background (a lot darker than what I ended up with), because that was how the reference picture that I took,…

24 Glass and Water Drawing 01
Glass and Water Drawing 01
This one was really difficult from a number of points. Getting the original sketch done using the pencil measurement method yielded mixed results. After completing the drawing I concluded that I was perhaps trying to get too many points measured with a method that…

Drawing of a Still Life of PearApples, Bananas, and Apples
Drawing of a Still Life of PearApples, Bananas, and Apples
This one I'm very happy with. I found that using the proportional divider to be pretty challenging, as it was difficult, if not impossible, for me to get the ends clearly focused while looking at where I wanted the measurement points…

20 Horse Drawing
 Horse Drawing
This is my horse, of course, but his name isn't Mr. Ed. I'm very happy with how this guy turned out, especially as he is my first attempt at a horse drawing. But then, most of what I've posted so far, are first attempts. The little, itty bitty, stitching was done with a 0.3mm…

19 Tiger Drawing
Tiger
Ok, here is my Tigger drawing. I used the erasing method to get the various hair and whisker highlights/definition. I also used this method to develop the ruff of fur on the left hand side of his face, after I had already developed the fur shading in that area. Somehow it just didn't q…

Be My Valentine
 Be My Valentine
This is a little off topic, but this is the kind of pen and ink drawings that I used to do. This one is a Valentine that I made for my Annie, which she colored in with water color pencils (so it's a pencil drawing, kind of). She suggested that I post it, as a visual gift to…

South African Squirrel, Tweaked
South African Squirrel, Tweaked
Here is my squirrel after tweaking per what I think Nolan meant about the giving a bit more white space in the hair. I also gave a bit more shadow in a few spots.

South African Squirrel
South African Squirrel
This one is a bit different than presented, as I was going for a more realistic look. After a bit of research, I found that this is a South African squirrel, and they really do have those funny little ears. Over all, I'm fairly happy with this effort. I tried a more mu…

Old Stone Church
 Old Stone Church
This one has taken about a week to do and most of my time was spent in the 4 days for the preliminary drawing. This was a lot of work to complete, but I'm very happy with the outcome.  I may take a day or two off to rest up, now that this one is finished.

Old Barn Revisited, Again
 Old Barn Revisited, Again . . . .
Here are some tweaks to the 'Old Barn' drawing that I mentioned that I'd planned on doing. The most obvious is the light coming through the barn doorway. I, also, darkened up the tree shadow behind the barn and moved a fence post that was obliviously not in…

Koru
 Koru
This one proved most difficult trying to do freehand. :P Boy, was there a lot of redrawing and erasing, so, I did make a first drawing to trace for the final. Getting various objects to match in size relationship to the photo proved extremely difficult, and I'm still not happy with…

Old Barn Revisited
 Old Barn Revisited
Ok, here are the small tweaks that I've made to my drawing. Sarah, the part that I gave more shadow to, aside from a little in the front, is behind the barn where the tree should be shading the ground. I think it helped, too, and thanks again for your observations.

Old Barn
 Old Barn
Originally, this one gave me some problems because of the downward slope from the road to the back of the barn, making the back of the barn taller. Where the gate is, it just seemed too steep, but I finally got my mind wrapped around it and was able to go forward. As I was contempl…
