Realist Rose
« on: September 27, 2011, 04:37:03 PM »
Anxious to start the Rose. I can see how you copy nature Nolan....alot of it is using the mind's eye. Such as being aware of the curvature of the leaf in shadow and other side in light. Also, the use of reflected sky light where it ought to be. I can see how you even extend something (like the light edge between the pink on the petal)...these are interesting variations of the subject and i see that you make them clear to the viewer....these things are what makes a painting really good.   I also see how the colors don't have to be exactly as you used because everyone will have a variation of the rose and this is the exciting part...nobody knows really how it will turn out till it's finished..this is art.

The moment you find yourself mostly satisfied with a painting and think you'll "just quickly" do this or that, that's the moment to stop completely. Take the painting off your easel and put it aside for at least 24 hours, then reassess whether it really needs that tweak.

I'm afraid I'm feeling too bogged down to even attempt to draw this one. Perhaps the next one.
I'll look forward to seeing all the entries. That's a nice prize at the end.  O0

Pat, it all boils down to one word - Observation.

Each one has to work at developing their powers of observation. Each artist has to do it on their own - no one else can do it for them - someone else can only tell them how to do it.

Myself, I don't care for challenges, I'm not near good enough for competitions at this time.  :o

Rick... its not a matter of being good enough, its a chance to stretch yourself a little bit and build up your confidence. Its amazing what you can learn by taking on a challenge. i.e. me and my tulips. I can honestly say I would have missed out on a lot of wonderful lessons had I not taken up the gauntlet. Thats what its all about. Just good old fun.
Cheers, Val

that's right, it's all about trying new things in a group situation so we can all learn from each other. That way we all become better artists along the way. It's actually not about winning at all. If you get to learn something new or improve along the way, then you have already won O0

We just add a prize to give everybody an incentive to keep expanding the comfort zone :)

Okay here it is. I finished it today. I am overall pleased with it. It has made me realize how far I have come in a short time and what I will hopefully be capable of doing in the future. Plus I used oils and had less struggle than hose pesky acrylics. I really love the oils. they make me want to paint outdoors. When the heat goes away.

WOW Smokie..great job on it! O0 How'd you ever do it without first going over the replay?? Looks real good.
The moment you find yourself mostly satisfied with a painting and think you'll "just quickly" do this or that, that's the moment to stop completely. Take the painting off your easel and put it aside for at least 24 hours, then reassess whether it really needs that tweak.

I agree with you Dennis. Sometimes you just know even without seeing it in a photo by the "nature" of things. I added some deep blue to suggest deeper water on current one, and it wasn't in the photo, but it helped.
