How to get Chrome (or silver, at least)?
« on: April 19, 2012, 07:20:15 PM »
I am trying to paint a present for my doctor in thanks for all the help he has rendered me recently, but what I had planned is, what I thought, would be a simple stethoscope.  However, the chrome plating has me stymied.  The closest I could come up was cobalt blue and burnt/raw umber, but this was but a poor substitute.  If anyone has had experience creating a believealbe chrome, I would be in your debt if you would share your technique with me.

Thanks!

Walt

Hi WaltLady

If you've got the cash for it there is a replay available from the Paintbasket TV site called "Painting Silver". I think it's part of the Still Life series:

Waltlady is this for watercolours or for oils?

Dennis,

This is for watercolor.  I've learned that the surrounding colors are reflected in the "chrome," but this is just to display a medical instrument (attached) that I can't get right.

Study the reflections in the silver carefully. Most of the reflected light will be the white of the paper and the shadows will be a light blue as in the painting.

Walt,
