Nina, it's gorgeous!  I love the table cloth now that it reflects the background.  It doesn't look so stark white.

Also, I think your shadows are fine but that's just the opinion of an amateur.     Hopefully Nolan can come by with his expert eye.

Nina, I think your changes with the background was the right thing to do.  The pears are much more in focus now. I also like the reflection of the background colour in the table cloth.     
The only thing I might suggest is to intensify this reflection towards the wall a little bit and maybe lighten it in the front? As Lillian said, this is only another opinion af an amateur... but I think the reflection should be more intense at the source of the reflection so to speak.  Do you know what I mean? Sometimes difficult to explain clearly.

So much better Nina.  Perhaps the shadows could be a little darker since there is a fair amount of contrast in the rest of the picture, so you could do this if you want to.  Also one tiny spot-where the two pears join looks sharp instead of round, just round it every so slightly and the pear will appear more round.  Dosen't need much more to be done good work & congrats.

Nina, I placed your paintings side by side to see the comparison changes and to determine what makes the difference. I actually like both of them but, after studying I could see the lovely background on your first painting competes a little with the Pears. (Your eye is drawn to look at both near equally). So, in terms of highlighting the main characters in your paintings, the second one takes the trophy. 
Will you be putting it in a frame?

Rounding the pear in the front right that overlaps the middle pear was a good choice, IF you want to try it I woudl also carry that shadow more donw the middle pear as the light source woudl indicate that a shadow is being cast done the side away from the light, unless you have two light sources.  I think the brightening up of the pears by a tiny few touches of the lightest greens and yellows is a good suggestion and the shadow on that one pear would finish it up. But all in all you will know when it is finsihed and as I have foudn you can ruin a painting by trying to make all the changes others see in the orginal piece, trust yoruself and end it when you feel comfortable ending it other wise  you might regret trying to much, you can always do another making those changes.

By the way I love the first one best with that color background it just needed some softening and the table cloth done the same way you did in the second photo.  Might be a good series to think about doing.
