Very informative video Nolan...shows how using artistic licsence alone can really help once you know what is needed and where.
The moment you find yourself mostly satisfied with a painting and think you'll "just quickly" do this or that, that's the moment to stop completely. Take the painting off your easel and put it aside for at least 24 hours, then reassess whether it really needs that tweak.

Your portrait is looking good, Gail. It's really hard to see the little details that make the likeness.
Nolan, what software did you use to compare the two images - it seems a really useful thing to be able to do. Can we have a lesson? I have a cut down version of photoshop but i can only do basic things with it.

Karen I use PhotoImpact, but Photoshop can do the same thing. You lay one image over the other and then reduce the top ones opacity

Nolan,
What version of PhotoImpact do you use and does it also allow you to tile a photo?
I'm curious.  It looks good.
I've noticed that some of these programs can be very expensive depending on what version one would choose to buy.

I really enjoyed the portrait class and wanted to do more but I had to set this aside while catching up on all the classes I missed-still life, watercolour etc.  Vacation in Hawaii kind of messed up my schedule, but happy to say I finished this today.

Gail, vacation in Hawaii!  What a hardship! :2funny:

Your portrait is awesome!  Nice work over all, especially on the beard, the wrinkles and the jacket.   :congrats:

Two minor things that crossed my mind as I looked at this guy. His mouth seems too pink, like he's wearing lipstick .  Also, you might add a twinkle in his eyes.

I'm sure Nolan will be impressed with your good work.  Of course he gives the best input.

Gail, I love the hat and the beard especially and that zip! You've got nice clean looking skin tones and the guy is looking straight at you. I haven't got the reference photo handy so maybe as Lillian suggested a highlight in the eyes might add even more life. I think he's lovely.

I checked the photo and there is a tiny highlight at the top of the eyes that I guess I missed, maybe I will add it.  The guy appears very "tanned" in the photo I found that I didn't like the skin colour when I painted it.  I did pink up his colour a little.  The lips were quite pale, colourless and his mouth quite wide and flat-hard to paint and look realistic.  Maybe I pinked him up too much on the lips.  I like his overall colour better though.
