Colour Bias/Undertone & The '6' Primaries

Well this is the first time I have read this post. And I must say WOW! Tony good for you. As long as you are happy that is all that matters. For me life is to short to be to concerned about my colors. I am like Alan . I just grab some paint and go for it. If I don't like it I gesso over it.  [saves canvas When I first started painting I bought all kinds of colors. Which I do not use. Because I did not know how to use a color wheel. So I will probably use those colors to paint my barn.

Oh man...  and I just went out today and bought the first book    I was actually wondering if we would find the book here locally... as true as Bob's your uncle... they had 2 copies on the shelf.  I am sooo thrilled... and now I see there is a new one out

Seeing as we are talking about colour mixing here... I thought I'd post this here instead of opening another discussion... hope you don't mind Tony 

Got the link for the video via Twitter and found it to be quite interesting, makes sense as well as confusing  all at the same time ... now I realise as well, why some paint manufacturers label their Cyan, Lemon Yellow (mostly) and Magenta/Permanent Rose (like Windsor & Newton, Lukas Artists Paints etc.) as their Primary Colours and not Cad. Red, Cad Yellow and Ultramarine

Dennis/Nolan, another question... your oil paint range that you 'carry' or have...what colours does it all consist out of...just for interest sake.  Reason I am asking is that I see in the Colour Mixing Recipes book... he uses a total of 30 colours (which includes white).  My personal range only consists out of the 6 colour system of Lemon Yellow/Cad. Yellow, Cad. Red/Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine/Phthalo blue... so I have a warm and cool colour of yellow, red and blue...then to the above 6, I have added Viridian and the earth colours of Yellow Ochre, Raw/Burnt Sienna and Raw/Burnt Umber.  I know the earthy tones can be mixed from the 3 or 6 colour system...like Raw Sienna is just basically a darker version of Yellow Ochre...which is made up of Cad. Yellow and added to that it's complimentary in different increments.  (this is something I learned from your dear friend Andre Grobler's videos last year  )

I absolutely love the vibrancy of the colours in the Color Mixing Recipes book and with a limited palette as per above... I doubt if one could achieve all that... or am I being wrong  .  One thing I have learned is that to keep the colours vibrant... when it comes to mixing alternative colours... is to make sure you do not include a colour that has a bias towards the complimentary (say mixing purple...to use Alizarin Crimson-which lends towards blue undertone and Ultramarine and not Cad. Red which has a orange undertone and is the complimentary of blue)...otherwise it is much easier to get mud as well as the colours are not vibrant (that is to say if that is your aim offcourse)

Thanks for sharing this video. (watched it twice)  Very convincing argument for the primaries.  Makes you want to get out your cerulean and crimson and try your own version of the colour wheel.  The cyan-magenta-yellow isn't new as it is a mainstay in printing and graphics, but I was never as convined to its relevancy in colour mixing in painting.  Definitely worth spending some time exploring.
