How to Draw Step by Step – Lets Draw pencil drawing course contents:

Learn what equipment you will need for pencil drawing and how cheap this hobby really is.
Learn how to sharpen your pencils correctly by sharpening the four different pencil points we use in pencil drawing. We then learn about the 4 different ways to hold your pencil while drawing and when to use each.
In this class you will learn how to erase and smudge correctly and what not to do so you avoid disasters. We then erase a pretty sunset scene.
Next you will learn how to use your pencils correctly and when to use each pencil. There are four basic strokes you need to master in order to draw successfully. We then also draw a tonal chart.
In this lesson you learn how to bring your drawings to life by correctly using light, shadows and reflected light in your drawing. You will learn the difference between them and how to use each correctly.
In this class you will learn how to erase and smudge correctly and what not to do so you avoid disasters. We then erase a pretty sunset scene.
In this lesson we put our shading and stroke knowledge into practice by drawing these delicious berries.
This lesson is all about planes, what they are and how they help us draw. We draw these rocks for practice.
Cross hatching is an awesome technique for drawing quickly, we get a feel for the technique by drawing our coffee cups.
Now that we know how to cross hatch we draw this cute little teddy bear.
Another quick drawing technique is scumbling. You will learn the 5 different scumbling techniques and then put it into practice by drawing a goldfish.
In order to create all the textures we see around us, we need to learn 14 new techniques as well as the power of negative shapes.
In this lesson we put our texture techniques into practice by drawing an old, rickety barn.
Next we learn how to break down a complex scene into easy to draw shapes so that we can redraw complex scenes.
Then we learn how persepctive works so that we can place any object into any drawing and it will fit in perfectly.
There are many ways to resize a picture so that it fits our drawing paper, in this lesson we learn 7 of these techniques.
The grid may be as ancient as the hills, but few artists really know how to use it correctly. This lesson makes the grid easy.
We learn how to draw animals with short fur, long hair, hide, feathers, wool, and whiskers. We then practice one of the techniques by drawing a squirrel.
Next we draw this friendly horse to get some more practice drawing animal textures.
A little bit of theory in this lesson. We learn about the crucial vanishing points and how to draw using them. Lots of practical exercises.
We learn how to compose a still life, redraw it using the proportional divider and then draw a thumbnail sketch.
This is our first day outdoors, so we venture into the garden to draw what we see. You will learn how to redraw using your pencil to measure. Nolan demonstrates how to draw this wheelbarrow garden.
Artists always struggle with drawing trees. In this lesson you will learn some amazing tricks which will allow you to draw trees that look like you have sketched in every leaf.
We go on a field trip in this lesson. Learn what to take with when drawing outdoors and how to choose what to draw. There is a practical demo of a seascape in this class.
Our final drawing of the course is all about drawing flowers. Learn not only how to draw them, but also the secret “sauce” that you need to look out for to make them realistic.
No drawing course is complete without learning how to protect and frame your drawings, so a perfect ending to a perfect course.
To anybody thats thinking about taking the pencil drawing course with Nolan and The Paint Basket.

Don’t think, just do it!

In this course you learn about everything and then some…
After the course I couldn’t believe that I was able to draw so well. Paint Basket really leaves nothing out of this course and the tutoring is the best I have ever experienced.

I learned so much is this drawing course. I had fast responses to any questions I had. I felt that Nolan was really interested in you learning and understanding the material. And I especially enjoyed it when Dennis was a quest teacher. The warmth that was generated by Nolan and Dennis made one feel so good about the course. It is such a joy to learn from people that have a sense of humor and really enjoy passing on their expertise. No sale pitch just wanting to help you learn….rare these days. Thank you

I have been drawing for several years mostly by using the grid method to resize small pictures. I have never taken drawing lessons before but I have watched drawing videos on line. But doing this course is giving me a solid foundation and is helping me to see mistakes I have made in the past and I can see how I can improve. I also find the forum feedback extremely motivating and very useful. Thank you Nolan and Dennis, you are great teachers. I find the way they presented each lesson was very down to earth and easy to follow.

This course has given me the confidence to keep on drawing. When I first started, I felt like my drawings were worse than a 3 y/o. After almost completing this course, I now see that, although I’m no Leonardo Da’Vinci, I can at least produce drawings that are recognizable and somewhat pleasing to look at. Also, I have noticed that I look at things differently. I have started seeing shadows and edges on everyday things and thinking they might be nice to draw.

I am learning something new every day😊😊😊

This class has been great for me. I am a retired teacher and one day recently I picked up a pencil and started sketching. Granted I am not very good (have never been creative) but have enjoyed trying my hand at some of the elementary sketches on the Internet. When I came across your web site, I thought this would be great for a beginner like me. The teacher is so skillful in giving instructions and illustrating at the same time. I look forward to completing each class presented.

  3. Jean (verified owner)

I have just begun working through the classes. I am pleased with the videos, which show how to. I am printing the downloads for reference. The stills are clear. I think I will learn a lot about drawing. I am hopeful that this course will help me overcome the inner critic of drawing.

Happy to be back learning from Nolan! This time the drawing basics I never had. Relaxed and thorough, inspired and humorous, a winning combination. Appreciate I can go at my own pace and confident my skill will increase as I work at it. I love this course. Thanks Nolan❣️

I am really enjoying this course. There is a lot of material. I hope by being able to draw it will help in my water color painting.

    I really enjoyed it.

I am enjoying your classes tremendously. It is fun to learn this way, almost effortless. Besides, my progress is already visible. Thank you very much.

  12. Kim (verified owner)

This was a very comprehensive class, with everything from how to use properly sharpen a pencil to tonal values and drawing texture. Very thorough, especially for a beginner. Nolan was easy to follow and didn’t ramble. I am 8,000 miles away and 18 hours behind, but was glad to have access to this course online. Well worth the money.

Really enjoying this course, not to technical, but challenging to a raw beginner.

  14. Anoop Joshi (verified owner)

Just started the classes which commences with all the basic essentials for a starter like me. Nolan’s style of teaching is very enjoyable and I look forward to reviewing my improvements in 3/4 weeks time!

This is great. I’m an ex underground miner so not too many artistic bits included in my makeup. A total klutz of course but we miners tend to have perseverance.
    Highly recommended, it’s fun.

I have been pencil drawing for a couple of years, without much technical info. This class has taught me some very valuable, yet simple, techniques that have given me the confidence to create amazing drawings. Thank you Nathan for your friendly, entertaining, easy to follow videos.

I can’t begin to tell you how much I have enjoyed this course. Only on week one, but my goodness. I’m 64 and have not drawn since I was about 5 or 6 years old. Didn’t think I had it in me to draw if my life depended on it. I’m still pretty rubbish but the few things I have drawn and learned I’m actually surprised at myself. In fact I even took photos with my phone and showed people. Who would have thought. It gave me the confidence to copy a few simple things off the internet, something that two weeks ago I would not even contemplate. Just fantastic.

Easy to understand but it takes some practices to be good. Also it would be nice if I could load up the course videos on the YouTube app on my iPad. The videos are not very easy to navigate on the safari web browser. Otherwise, the course is fantastic.

I have been unable to continue the course as I have great difficulty translating the Australian accent into English. I found I am unable to understand but about only every 5th word.

Sorry to hear you are battling with my accent. If you hover over the video, you can click the CC icon. Closed Captions will then display so you can read the words.

Very detailed instructions. I’d never drawn before & by taking the Let’s Draw class, I produced some amazing drawings.

I’m currently working my way through this course and I love it! I purchased another couple of classes/courses before this but felt I wasn’t quite ready for them so enrolled in this. It’s entertaining and informative and while there is a lot of theory discussed you still do a lot of exercises in order to practice and make the theory stick.
I thought it was a bit expensive when I bought it but actually working through the lessons: seeing the very detailed accompanying pdfs, as well as the numerous videos AND actually feeling that I’ve made significant progress (I was terrible before I started!) in just the first 5 days has made me realise what a complete bargain this course is! I just wish I’d heard about it many years and many pounds ago (argh the sheer number of books I’ve bought in the past and tutorials I’ve followed which have been a bit of a waste of time and money…)!
My favourite part is that you feel Nolan is speaking directly to you and that he knows you’re a beginner but knows you’re capable of excelling.
The content doesn’t overwhelm nor does it condescend.
The best money I’ve spent in a long time.

Very good class. Im teaching young kids and it jumps right in but also sprinkles technique which we needed. Videos are short so can do multiple in a week.
